Great overview of controls using MATLAB/Simlulink,

I loved the book.
Great explanations. Not a complete first book in controls though. It helps to have a little more background or have read one of the standard control's texts.

I found this book by chance in the library in our company. I'd studied aerospace engineering and specialised in flight control about 7 years earlier, and this book was perfect for me. It provided a refresher of the basics, and was a good introduction to the more advanced concepts like LQR, H-infinity control, etc., as well as helping me dust off my Matlab skills. But it might not be the best book for newcomers to the subject - but it does complement other books (like Ogata, Stevens and Lewis) very well.

Modern control design,

It's a really good text especially for the examples and integrated Matlab code. The language is extremely simple and the context will surely help you to understand the practice. The part about the pole placement design and optimal control is quite good.

This book isn't horrible, it is just that one probably will not actually learn much valuable information about control design from this book. If one wants a quick reference for MATLAB subroutines or optimal control proofs, then this is a good book. Otherwise, I cannot think of a good use for this book. Many important subjects are not discussed, such as performance limitations or transmission zeros.
There are other books which provide better insight into control design that have just as much MATLAB support. Books by Sigurd Skogestad and Graham Goodwin on control design are much better and have MATLAB codes. For those interested in optimal control (which is usually synonymous with modern control), books written by Robert Stengel and Brian Anderson are some good and cheap texts. |
