Book Description

April 30, 2000
In this third volume of the encyclopaedia on the Modern Coral Reef Aquarium, you will find seven chapters containing a well of information not found in any other book on the subject!

The book starts out with a small chapter putting the animals we keep into an evolutionary perspective. Chapter 2 contents microscopic single-celled animals that are so important for the biological balance of the aquarium. Chapter 3 takes a look at the sponges, true filter feeders among the invertebrates.

Chapter 4 deals with many small invertebrate phyla - such as the sea spiders and the water bears - most of which are rarely described in other aquarium books. The huge chapter 5 covers all the phyla commonly called "Marine Worms", and here you will find scientifically updated information on all sorts of marine worms as well as unique photos and comments on those species and groups frequently found in your reef aquarium. Do not miss the chance to view and learn about these interesting groups of animals! Chapter 6 tells you a lot on the Crustaceans, a group of invertebrates that have been popular among aquarists since the beginning of the marine hobby. You will find a well of new information on the most common species seen in the trade as well as presentations of more uncommon, but nevertheless highly interesting species for the reef enthusiasts.

Last, but certainly not least, chapter 7 presents 43 private reef aquaria from all over the world. Here you will find interesting photos, technical descriptions as well as a lot of information on the animals inhabiting the different tanks. Buy this book and see how other aquarists have chosen to build their coral reef aquaria!

4.0 out of 5 stars Modern Coral Reef #3, July 5, 2000
This review is from: The Modern Coral Reef Aquarium Vol # 3 (Hardcover)
I currently own the first and second volumes, and this newest addition is excellent also. I am impressed that the authors described some of the lesser known, but by no means unimportant, creatures in the marine hobby. Some of the organisms included are: Single-celled organisms (Ciliates, ets), Spongs, Marine worms (even bristles), crabs (including Horseshoes), Lobsters, Shrimp (ornamental and otherwise), and other miscellaneous creatures. No other single aquarium book has offered all these organisms before in one book, a very impressive feat!

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended, May 15, 2005
This review is from: The Modern Coral Reef Aquarium Vol # 3 (Hardcover)
There are those who swear by Delbeek and Sprung's series whereas others gravitate toward Fossa and Nilsen series. Personally I think the modern marine aquarist should have both and they both have something to contribute and offer a slightly different perspective. For the beginner though one should decide to follow one set of advice and only after some experience try to assimilate the works of many authors and slowly experiment.
For some Fossa and Nilsen some might find a little more approachable and straight forward.
In the end I believe it is a matter of personal taste.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Book, A Must For Any SALTWATER HOBBYIST, April 17, 2001

Nick A.Nagy (New York, U.S.) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Modern Coral Reef Aquarium Vol # 3 (Hardcover)
This was an excellent book, which was so easy to read and understand.Even if you never thought about owning a saltwater aquarium , this book will make you start one. It has alot of detail, discusses alot of equipment and how to use it.It discusses every aspect of the hobby and it should be one of the first books on your bookshelf if you have a saltwater aquarium. It not only talks about setting up the aquarium, but it also talks about what fish to put in the aquarium.Fossa and Nilsen are great authors and know everything about saltwater aquariums, buy their books if you can, their well worth the money.
