3.0 out of 5 stars Great musicians but a bit slow
This came highly recommended. I bought it as a gift for my child who is a good drummer and has seen some of these musicians live. Unfortunately, we both felt the stars performed well but there was too much down time between numbers and great solos. Anotherwords, it dragged a bit and was slow. Better editing may have helped but I know many people want to see the whole...

4.0 out of 5 stars Inspiration, November 24, 2005
This review is from: Modern Drummer Festival 2005 DVD (DVD)
As many of us have read the review in MD about Rodney's performance...his performance is great. The real gem on this DVD is NERVE...yes the band with JO-JO Mayer...this is where the rubber meets the road or technique meets musicality...this segment alone is worth the price to any drummer who wishes to up their game on the kit. All I can say is WOW...not for the technique alone, but for the musicianship Jo-Jo demonstrates...this is a must have...I am now a huge fan of the band NERVE...and so will you after viewing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, inspiring and entertaining, February 24, 2006
This review is from: Modern Drummer Festival 2005 DVD (DVD)
I'm a drummer, but I think even non-drummers will enjoy this DVD set. Excellent, inspiring playing. Truly entertaining. MD evidently gave a lot of lattitude to the performing drummers because they each had unique segments; some alone, soloing for 10's of minutes, others with their full bands, etc. Really kept it entertaining.

5.0 out of 5 stars I have only seen parts online, but..., January 17, 2006

...I have gathered all I need to for this review. I have seen some of their other festivals, and I have actually been to PASIC '03. This festival was like no other.
They had the biggest names in drums. Jason Bittner and Chris Adler, new comers to the metal genre, both gave exceptional performances. Keith Carlock, really had a loose feel, his drums sounded huge, he was really moving around alot; great performance. Rodney Holmes, blazing speed, cool latin groove, awesome dreadlocks.
The real treat for me was Jojo Mayer. He was amazing at MD fest '98, and he showed no signs of slowing 7 years later. He has perfected the art of live jungle drum n'bass. He seemed to tower over his drums, which sounded amazing. His hands were blazing all over the small setup for his solo, crossing over each other with no problem. His foot technique still boggles my mind.
I was slightly disappointed in the fact that Danny Carey was not on the DVD. Carey, to me, has always been a polyrhythm guru, who like Jojo, has gotten better with age. Hearing him is great, and I have seen him from very far away. To see him up close, and really study what he was doing was something I was looking forward to seeing. It's a shame.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great musicians but a bit slow, February 5, 2008

Unfortunately, we both felt the stars performed well but there was too much down time between numbers and great solos. Anotherwords, it dragged a bit and was slow. Better editing may have helped but I know many people want to see the whole performance. In conclusion, it was probably just a long performance -- the viewer just has to wait or search for the jewels.

5.0 out of 5 stars Modern Drummer Festivas, April 8, 2007
This review is from: Modern Drummer Festival 2005 DVD (DVD)
If you intend on purchasing this DVD make sure you plenty of free time.
Once you hit play you can't stop watching it. All of the performances are caught with excellant angles and audio. It's worth purchasing just to watch Chad Smith and Ian Paice.

This is the first DVD i bought through Amazon.com. I like this DVD very much. The drummer's are all professional and most of em i didn't know. My intention was to watch Chris Adler (Lamb Of God) only \m/ However, the kid on the first disc really caught my eyes and felt the extraordinary playing by this young 14 year old dude like "WOAHH~~!! hehehe

Get the disc ryte now if u wont believe wat im crapping about hahaha. ROCK OK!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Cut the Third Disc, March 29, 2008

This review is from: Modern Drummer Festival 2005 DVD (DVD)
I am a huge fan of Modern Drummer and most of eveything they do is very informative and entertaining. This set is great until you get to the third disc. Most of the interviews lack a great deal of personality. It is a great skill to play the drums well, it is an even greater skill to explain what you are doing... some of these great drummers fall just a little short.
