Format: Paperback
Found this book to be a good overview and intro to ERP systems. It's the perfect book to provide a diverse audience (Accounting, IT, MBA students) with a solid foundation understanding of ERP systems. The book addresses the history of ERP systems, who needs them, how to justify their implementation, and the different enterprise functions that an ERP package can encompass. This book is easy to read and does not bog the reader down in a lot of unnecessary detail. Between this book and the class, my interest in ERP systems was really peaked! Buy this book...you won't regret it!

I found this book to be a good place to start learning about ERP systems and current, big, broad concepts that blend business (particularly accounting) with systems functionality. It introduces terminology and is a fairly easy read with both text and graphics. I came away from the book with a basic understanding of ERPs and references to other sources and concepts to further my understanding and keep current over time.

As mentioned before, the author is very resourceful and quick to respond to questions. After browsing through the chapters and reviewing some of the additional teacher resources (designed for classroom use), I found the book to very highly consistent with professional standards of successful implementation. She walks through and explains how to properly conduct many of the essential, yet often overlooked stages of process planning, vendor selection, and post-implementation evaluation. For being just under 200 pages, this is about as comprehensive as you'll find.

Modern ERP is a great book for ERP newcomers looking to understand the implications of ERP as well as professional / experienced ERP salespeople, consultants, or system administrators looking to refine their skills and knowledge base.

Format: Paperback
Today’s business student and professional must understand the fast-paced, tech-savvy, globally-immersed competitive world in which she works. She must know how to use technology, but more importantly, she must understand business. The functional silos of the pre-1990s have all collapsed, and what has risen in their place are customer-centric, data-driven, cross-functional, enterprise-wide business processes. Thus, to compete in current global markets, organizational stakeholders must embrace effective business processes, fueled by the use of Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software and industry best practices.

To that end, Modern ERP provides a complete but well-balanced approach to the increasingly-complex and highly-relevant topic of ERP. The book is essentially a “big picture” of ERP and provides a one-stop read for those interested in learning about business processes and the software and integrated data that makes them effective. From the history of past ERP failures and successes to the reasons why businesses deploy ERP software, this book covers relevant terminology, the ERP life cycle, ERP module essentials (including CRM and SCM), Business Process Redesign (BPR), and mapping. It addresses timing and tips for ERP software package selection and itemizes specific tasks for successful deployment, with or without the use of consultants. Interestingly, it does so without an ERP vendor-centric focus.

Additionally, part of the book is devoted to the highly-significant topic of IT controls and auditing controls. Other areas address the recent intersection and impact of cloud computing, real-time access and mobility, and business analytics to ERP software.
