Understanding a Culture,

Required college text. Good reading better price than on campus bookstore. A great aid in understanding the recent past and current culture of East Asia. As China's place in global economics expands the American public should strive to understand the culture.

I had to order this book for a college course and it was so expensive in the book store. The book came in great condition and I got my moneys worth out of it.

As a university textbook, this was useless,
By
This review is from: Modern East Asia (Paperback)
This book covers somewhat modern Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese history.
I was required to read and use this textbook during an East Asian class in college. I did use the book for the class at the beginning, but after a while I determined that the content was poorly organized and poorly detailed. The book is probably more suitable for students who just like a supplemental textbook to savor their East Asian history needs. Maybe this opinion of the book was a result of my professor's course syllabus, but I believe that it is not very well written for mainstream use.

terrible,
This review is from: Modern East Asia (Paperback)
this is quite an atrocious textbook. It jumps around, goes into great detail about unimportant subjects then glosses over entire periods. Parts of the book are so filled with untranslated japanese terms that you are supposed to memorize their english meaning that it becomes unreadable. The style of it is that of a disinterested narrative rather than a history textbook, made annoyingly apparent by its tangential and winding discussions of nothing in particular rather than the typical clear cut and straight-forward history textbook. Overall this is the worst textbook I have ever seen, if you can avoid it buy something else.
To add insult to injury the textbook itself is a cheaply made paperback that costs $80. The layout of the book is obnoxious, a 2 inch white margin is present on both sides of this unusually small textbook, (which would be fine if it was riddled with supplementary information like every.other.textbook has) wasting space probably just to increase page count. The authors thought it would be a good idea to choose nonstandard and "asian" font for many of the titles and subsections, which does not work in this setting.

Too much highlighting by previous owner. I thought it said there wasn't much if any at all. The book has obiviously been used thoroughly, but the pages are still pretty intact, which is a plus. Overall, thanks.
