This book is essential to anyone wanting to tune a newer engine with electronics. Covers basics of cams, cylinder heads, valves, etc, then goes on to give good starting points for your application. Mainly written from the street performance / economy viewpoint, but there is info in here for ralyy, etc. also. Highly reccomended!

I have read a few books on fundamentals of cars and todays engines, but none covered so much about performance/economy engines. Everything is explained in plain language, and the content are extremely iformative. It became my favorite book from the very first day.

While there is a lot of good info in this book, I think the author is somewhat liberal in what he considers "fact". While it's an easy read and well presented, I wouldn't take everything for complete truth.

Certainly covered all the basics of combustion engines and introduced some key formulas to remember. It's a little European car centered, but engine basics are the same. It is a little dated now, first printing was in '88, so many newer technologies and recent advancements are not touched upon at all. Still an excellent resource.

I like this book but I read it after I had already read 4 stroke performance tuning by the same author maybe thats why modern engine tuning seems to be just ok compared to 4 stroke performance tuning. What this book is, is very honest about actual results of replacing factory parts with aftermarket parts. After reading this book you also might be unwilling to spend $675 on aftermarket headers to get 3 more horsepower than the factory header.
