5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome book!, November 15, 2009
This review is from: The Modern Era of the Les Paul Legacy: 1968-2009 (Hardcover)
Robb has done it again! A comprehensive story of the Les Paul guitar from 1968-2009. This is a sequel to his first volume on Les Pauls from their origins in the 50's. This book is a labor of love - full of details, interviews, photos of the entire chronology of arguably the most famous electric guitar of all times! If you are a guitar player/collector/lover, you've got to own this book!

Book is really really really interesting. Lester was some kind of guy. This book is superb read, super interesting, great compliment to Vol I, which I also have. More books on these guys, not sports nitwits.

The volume 2 of this book is even better than volume 1, if you can believe that--and volume 1 is absolutely SUPERB! These are the ONLY books on the Les Paul guitars you'll ever need to buy. Rob Lawrence goes into meticulous detail with all the loving care, that all the other books lack. ALL of the photos and graphics are absolutely top quality. The problem with ALL the other books, regardless of the authors--is that they just can't get past the 1958-60 sunburst Les Pauls, Led Zeppelin and Jimmy Page....so they just blow off every single other LP guitar as hardly worth their "scholarship" and research to do any in depth writing about...resulting in a boring, redundant rehash of each others' books practically down to the SAME photos of the same spandex 'n hair metal artists, and the same catalog page reprints.
This book is the ultimate 'breath of fresh air' and EVERY variation of the Les Paul model, is treated with highest regard and respect. These guitars go FAR beyond heavy metal and blues...and this is the ONLY book to expound on that!
This book belongs in EVERY guitar player's collection...right alongside volume 1.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and a work of love, November 30, 2009

As Mr. Lawrence's second effort on Les Paul guitars as well as the man, this is a must have book for anyone who has an interest in contemporary (post 1960) Les Paul guitars. A well organized, fun to read book, with many wonderful pictures of a vast array of production and truly rare Les Paul guitars. Written not as marketing hype, but in an objective and accurate manner.

It is beautifully presented and bound, as well as exciting to read for any lover of Les Paul and Les Paul guitars. Insights into the Gibson factory, its staff, and methods of production as well.

If you want to really understand the instrument and its myriad incarnations and variations, this is the way to do so. It has some great information also on Les' personal Les Paul type-the low impedence 'recording' models as well as the many artist signature versions of this iconic instrument.

Thanks again for another great book Mr. Lawrence!

Robb has done his homework with a great book! The later history of this great guitar has been left out until now. It is a great read throughout and I still pick it up every now and then just to look at the pics. One of the best parts is on Strings & Things in Memphis and how they started the current sunburst Les Paul remake market back in the mid '70's. Back then you couldn't find or if you did, couldn't afford a late 50's burst and decent Gibson-made "reamkes" were nowhere to be found. I was fortunate to own one of the 24 first-ever late 50's remakes (page 90-92) and now owning 3 Les Pauls I know first hand what a great guitar it is. Whether you own one or dream of owning one or just love music, do yourself a favor and get this book. Great job Robb!

This review is from: The Modern Era of the Les Paul Legacy: 1968-2009 (Hardcover)
In this the second (and we have to believe the last) installment of the life of Les Paul and the Les Paul guitar, Robb Lawrence continues to amaze and delight fans of Les Paul and the guitar that bears his name.
Robb has written the definitive work on Les Paul from his childhood in Wisconsin, his entry into show business, his work with, and marriage to Mary Ford and his incredible inventions and contributions to the world of guitars and recording techniques.
This second edition picks up where volume one left us...the later and final years of Les Paul's life and the guitar the will continue to be built and treasured for years to come.
Robb had finished volume 2 and had called it "The Modern Era of the Les Paul Legacy: 1968-2008". But then, who could have known Les would die shortly there after. The book was put on hold, the last chapter of Les' life chronicled and it was renameed "....1968-2009".
EVERY fan of Les Paul, the Les Paul guitar or just guitars and guitar music in general HAS to have this two volume work in their collection !
Brian Amato,
Traverse City, Mich.

This book tells the story of a life dedicated to the guitar; the author already knew Les Paul a long time before his death and knows a lot of details. Very interesting reading for the Les Paul enthousiast.
