Book Description

October 1997
Modern Essentials shows how to achieve a sense of space and ease in the home by harmonizing aesthetics with practicality. Readers learn ways to create a home for living, not merely a designer showcase.

The book features four major current styles: Natural, New Classical, Soft Design, and Color and Contrast. Color photos show how to achieve each look through the use of interior space and light, textures and furnishings, and design details from tableware to door handles. Color palettes, fabric swatches, suggested flooring materials, and ideal accessories are shown, and since practicality is crucial, the final chapter covers basic considerations from planning to room layout to home security.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Selecting subtle colors and simple shapes, the author offers a refreshing definition of what modern means. Nothing contrived or jarring to the senses here--just an overview of some good furniture design and serene color palettes that seem to relax you as you look at them. Think how sweet they would be to come home to. -- Los Angeles Times, December 10, 1998

2.0 out of 5 stars Pass up this Non-Essential Book, March 26, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Modern Essentials (Hardcover)
I was greatly disappointed in this book. I asked for it as a birthday present and promptly returned it. This book is not for people seriously interested in modern interior design or architecture. The book was Martha Stewart-type fluff. While filled with photographs, even those were barely interesting and certainly were not memorable.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Essentials of Modern day living, April 23, 2001

This review is from: Modern Essentials (Hardcover)
This book has lovely photographs through out the pages. If you wish to find help someone achieve classic looks with modern touches. I wouldn't put it in the catagory with architecture, but Home and garden is right on the button. It shows many modern fixtures and various decorating styles which carry a clean open space environment that is seeked in a our modern day living. I enjoy going back to this book always for inspiriation. It has variation in bold or simple styles. If you are looking for a affluent look you will not find it here. If you seek artistic modern day looks this is your book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Compendiumof Modern Design, December 25, 2006

This review is from: Modern Essentials (Paperback)
This book is useful if you want general hints (the first part) and some practical hints (at the end) on modern European style trends of ten years ago. Rather artsy, but fun to look at.
