5.0 out of 5 stars Fowlie is Fantastic
I am writing this review to counter the annoying and undeserved review it recieved by someone obviously incapable of realistically critiquing poetry. This is not only one of the few available (maybe one of the first) anthologies of modern French poetry for anglophone readers, but with Marianne Caws, the best. 2.0 out of 5 stars Very Tough to Read
This is a book that is supposed to be works of surrealist poets, but not all of it is. This is a tough book to read at any level. It makes it ten times worse to read if you really don't like/understand poetry. I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone, unless of course that person has a great appreciation for French poetry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fowlie is Fantastic, November 30, 2009
This review is from: Modern French Poets (Dual-Language) (Paperback)
I am writing this review to counter the annoying and undeserved review it recieved by someone obviously incapable of realistically critiquing poetry. This is not only one of the few available (maybe one of the first) anthologies of modern French poetry for anglophone readers, but with Marianne Caws, the best. Wallace Fowlie's translation of the complete works of Arthur Rimbaud is unrivalled in my experience of about 5 translations of Rimbaud's work; and his expertise and artistry in adapting great visionary French poetry into English verse is appearant here too in Modern French Poets. Symbolist, Dadist, and Surrealist visions. Erotic, dreamy, electric, and a subtle nocturnal, yet luminous beauty only the French can write.
