Divinely Delightful!!,
By "arquail" (Palo Alto, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Modern Goddess' Guide to Life: How to Be Absolutely Divine on a Daily Basis (Paperback)
This book just gave me six ideas for the bridal shower I am throwing this month, including something that was stumping me: the theme! "Princess Pink Day!" (which is one of the book's party suggestions). Everyone will have to fill out the book's "What Kind Of Goddess Are You?" quizzes when they walk in the door, and we'll also play the book's games, "Presto! Instant Sex Magic!," "Love, Love, and More Love," and recite parts of the "I'm willing to accept diamonds as homage" manifesto. I want everyone to have fun while also tuning in to the deeper meanings of love and marriage, and these games offer both. I may give everyone a copy of the book as a party favor. The book is silly and fun, irreverent and compassionate, packed with some pretty deep wisdom, and sparkling with a zillion little reminders that life must be enjoyed while you sort out your issues and challenges. As Elle Woods and Carrie Bradshaw know very well, a pair of Manolo Blahniks and the right nail polish can be just as important as an hour on your therapist's couch. Ms. De Grandis has the right approach. What's not to love about a thoughtful self-help book that has glitter on the cover?

I'll be buying more copies of this book to give to friends who take themselves a bit too seriously...all my female friends will recognize themselves somewhere in this book. Very amusing and fun with really useful resources for clothes, makeup and spiritual guidance, this book will make a great gift. It's small, pink, cute and the cover reminds me of Kim Novack in "Bell, Book and Candle". What's not to love? Well done, Francesca de Grandis!

I absolutely adore this book-- it's pure fun! I bought copies for myself and my girlfriends, and had a blast with the quizzes. I'm taking it to a girls' night pajama party to share with more friends. Every woman should have this book-- and a tiara to wear with it!!

Does Spiritual Have to Mean Serious?,
By
This review is from: The Modern Goddess' Guide to Life: How to Be Absolutely Divine on a Daily Basis (Paperback)
Nope! This book is silly, pretty, sparkly and fun. With profound magical workings thrown in. Growing does not always have to be painful, and those of us who are always working on self-improvement and mystical power sometimes need to get off the high horse and giggle a bit. This is not one of Francesca's "serious" magical/spiritual/personal development books (Check out Goddess Initiation and Be A Goddess for that flavor), but it resonates with her silly humor and impeccable mystical work.

Wacky Wisdom with Important Truths Thrown In,
This review is from: The Modern Goddess' Guide to Life: How to Be Absolutely Divine on a Daily Basis (Paperback)
This is a wonderful book. Ms. DeGrandis is OBVIOUSLY one who lives closely with the Feri folk. Part of the magic of the fey is that they teach great lessons--such as how to identify your own flavor of magic/goddesshood--while distracting you with laughter, glitter, and play. And goofy quizes (which I thought were a lot of fun!)
For those who are not yet ready (or able) to find the wisdom hidden in the joy and play of this book, I'd recomend that they read BE A GODDESS or GODDESS INITIATION, two of Ms. De Grandis' other books. What a gift, being able to learn more about myself and the Goddess without a lot of dry dogma or bad "poetry". When I start to forget the joy which is at the root of my spiritual practice, this is the book I grab to remind me to laugh.

Real Goddesses don't take themselves too seriously....except for when they absolutely must.
On the one hand Francesca's humor in this book just shines through. I love her humor and jokes in here....and they age well. (I've read parts of this book multiple times now) On the other hand--and this is Francesca's genius--there are some important truths, lessons, and spells hidden within the humor. As a trickster Goddess I saw myself, and saw some of my failings (who me?) as well. More importantly than my loving it is how it has impacted my teenager. She memorized much of the chant/spells in the book. My favorite moment was when she declared, at 13, that she was a celibate sex Goddess. What made this so great a decleration was that she doesn't dress "sexy" by anyone's standards other than her own. (No MTV outfits on this girl) Modern Goddess' Guide to Life helped her to recognize her sensual and sexual self, and embrace them in their glory. That alone is worth the price of this book ten times over. Thanks for another great book!

Dear Fellow Divas,
If you are searching for guides on how to tap into your true potential, reclaim your true power, and to unleash the Inner Goddess that we all have, I would recommend 3 other books. This book, "The Modern Goddess' Guide to Life" was very disappointing and ineffective. The 3 other books that I found much greater encouragement and truth were: 1) "From Doormat to Diva!" by Merci Miglino. Quick read and very practical about learning how to love and cherish ourselves. Very helpful! 2) "Release the Seductress Within" by Laurie Sue Brockway. Quick read and practical. The theme is the same (about "unleashing your inner goddess"), however, it is a more sensual and sexual book, but truthful and enlightening. Very helpful! The author, Laurie Sue Brockway, seems to have written the same book under a different title, "How to Seduce a Man and Keep Him Seduced". I looked at the table of contents, and it has the same chapters and read an excerpt and it is the same excerpt as the book "Release the Seductress Within". 3) "Dark Side of the Light Chasers" by Debbie Ford. This is an incredible book that will change your life. A much profounder book than the previous 2 I recommended. The whole book is excellent, but Chapter 9 specifically deals with our Sacred Self (the Inner Goddess), b/c it encourages us to own our divinity, virtues, beauty, talents and achievements. From Chapter 9, Debbie Ford states, "Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure....We ask ourselves, 'Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented fabulous?' Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There's nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you....And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same....not only is it okay to say nice things about ourselves, it's imperative..." Acknowledging our good qualities is necessary in developing self-love. I have found this to be so true in discovering the Goddess within me. So good luck girls. By reading these 3 other books, you will be able to 1) Reclaim your true power, and 2) Awaken the True Inner Goddess within.

From the sparkly pink cover to the fun little games and quizzes, "The Modern Goddess's Guide to Life" satisfies the little girl and the playful woman in me. But something someone else recently said is more eloquent and to the point regarding this book's value. I know of a woman in the Armed forces, recently returned from Iraq, who had the book with her there. She said that, while she was there, Francesca's book helped her take care of herself and also still feel like a woman, neither of which is easy to do when you're in a war. A book that can provide that kind of support in radically difficult circumstances is a great book!

Modern Goddess approach,

Purchased as a gift for a 50-something friend. It's been passed around our reading group. We all laughed till we cried, gasped in amazement, and simply loved it. A must for any collective reading material of "the goddess".

It's not earth-shattering to hear that women fill many roles. But who would have thought "Goddess of Wrath and Unintentional Destruction"?
With tongue in cheek, this book guides us through self-acceptance and encourages the creation of more goddesses. My friends and I have shared many glasses of wine while naming each other's best characteristics. |
