Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

In this new and expanded edition of a classic volume first printed in 1965, "The Modern Hebrew Poem Itself" adds the dynamic voices of a new generation of Hebrew poets. Each poem appears in both its original Hebrew and an English phonetic transcription, along with extensive commentary and a literal English translation. This offers readers who know little or no Hebrew a way to experience the poem in a multi-faceted way they are able to speak and hear the lines as well as grasp the poem's meaning. Recognizing that poems have a unique order that may be missed by a reader who doesn't speak the poet's language, the editors provide the reader with an understanding of not only what the poet is saying, but how the idea is communicated. Also included in the volume is a valuable introduction to and historical overview of Hebrew poetry from 1880-1990. "The Modern Hebrew Poem Itself" is a must-have for lovers of poetry and Jewish literature.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonder, November 14, 2004
This review is from: The Modern Hebrew Poem Itself (Paperback)
Here in France there is almost no interest for Hebrew literature and almost no effort of translation (although recently Appelfeld's books began only to be published in French). So this anthology, "The modern Hebrew poem itself" is really a great gift from America's open-mindedness, literacy, and scholarship. I read the first edition of this anthology years ago in the Beaubourg Library in Paris, and I discovered Grinberg and Bialik. Thanks to the authors, their rich and intricate Hebrew was made clear. This new edition I purchased from Amazon offers new poets, new brilliant analysis and translations, new paths into an original and modern culture. It is to be read, re-read and relished.

5.0 out of 5 stars A very helpful book in learning Hebrew, October 14, 2004
This review is from: The Modern Hebrew Poem Itself (Paperback)
I used this anthology a lot when I was studying Hebrew. The phonetic transcription and translation were a big help to me. The selection of poems is outstanding. And it was special to study and learn a language through learning some of its great poetry. Also the interpretations of the poems are very interesting. A truly great anthology.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Hebrew Poems, March 9, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Modern Hebrew Poem Itself (Paperback)
I have used this book of Modernish Hebrew poems and there are some truly wonderful poems. The commentaries are also not only useful but insightful. I have used it in a teaching environment as well.

If it is reprinted I would recommend that the poems be given not only with transliteration in a side-by-side way, but also the translation. Maybe the book needs to be wide rather than long so this can be done in three columns. The commentary can then follow.
