Anna Riva is considered special in that her books discuss the "Black Arts", include these great little pictures of naughty or ominous things, and contained spellworkings that anyone could do.

She also included bits that were - not quite right. This book dates from the mid 1970s, so we see some early attempts to "validate" the material by including bits of this and smatterings of that, some of which look and sound ridicules by today's wisdoms, but it made for interesting reading back then.

But much of it is real. It is taken from various practices - like folk magic, voudon, witchcraft, root workers, ceremonial magic and even Christian spirituality. This book containes spells calling upon God, Gods and Goddesses, Saints and sinners.

The book is laid out by topics, like Black Magic, Good Luck or Protection. The herbs are then listed alphabetically under each section, and each herb has it's properties listed. There are instructions on how to use the herb and a spell or working or purpose for each herb.

The explanations are not long. This is not a big book, only 64 pages. So the material is short, sweet and to the point.

Finally, from the book: "The folklore of plants is as old as the written word itself, and the legends related are given as curiosa only." Well, you can decide that for yourself. boudica

Ann has done it once again. Her small but informidable books are always full of information. I found the Modern Herbal Spellbook to be enlightening as well as easy to understand. This special spellbook is loaded with the basics, easy to follow instructions and herb listing their purposes for your spellcasting. If you are looking for some new and different spells and desire to create a little magick of your own I reccomend this book.

This book can give you a good start when it comes to using herbal magic and sorcery, however, I only gave it three stars instead of 5 because this is not one of the better works by Anna Riva... For as small as the books she offers are, she does present some great information. It is well worth it if you are looking for some great ideas on using herbs in your magic, but not one of her best books ... Check out a few others of her books if you want to be impressed.

Much Love & Many Blessings,
Thorn Nightwind

The author breaks down the sections based upon use (black magic, white magic, love, luck, etc) And it's easy to follow and let's you know what you need to exactly do with the herb and what it's good for. I recommend it. It's short and to the point.
