5.0 out of 5 stars It's the book I wish I'd had..., June 22, 2004
This review is from: Modern High-Power Rocketry
An Illustrated How-to Guide (Paperback)
...when I started in high-power rocketry. Way back when, I had to rely on information from others at the launch. The information was good, but it would have been a lot better if I'd had this book available. There are a thousand and one little details like parachute rolling, motor retention, attaching wires to an altimeter, etc., etc. Those details are presented in this book so that you can read about them and understand them well before the launch.

The book is thoroughly illustrated with very clear photographs. It tends to lean toward Dr. Rocket/AT motors and reloads, probably because those are the most-used motors at this time. One run-through of a snap-ring motor would have been nice, though. The information on electronics, deployment, recovery, and scratchbuilding is likely to be useful to the individual who is moving to more-advanced rockets. The book concludes with a nice bibliography from magazines and on-line sources.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource, September 7, 2005
This review is from: Modern High-Power Rocketry
An Illustrated How-to Guide (Paperback)
Modern High-Power Rocketry has been most helpful to me since I am new to the hobby of high power rocketry. It answered many many questions and provided helpful tips and other relevant information that has made my first high power rocket project a success.

Photographs are great and like they say each is "worth a thousand words." Text is well written and easily understood even by a novice.

I highly recommend this book for the high power rocketeer.

Even though technology is advancing beyond this book, this is still a GREAT reference for those seriously looking into high power rocketry. Great information, I recommend this book highly.

4.0 out of 5 stars Only One Problem, June 14, 2007
This review is from: Modern High-Power Rocketry
An Illustrated How-to Guide (Paperback)
This is a GREAT reference for people wishing to learn more about high power rocketry. It really suffers only in comparison to its replacement.

When I encountered this title, I encountered MODERN HIGH POWER ROCKETRY 2 at the same time. I thought number two was a continuation of number one. Instead, it is a replacement for it.

Both books are superb but the replacement is so much better. This one explains the processes for building rockets, reloadable engines, recovery systems and the procedures for getting certified with one of the two big national organizations. Volume 2 covers that and more.

This is still a great book. It is just obsolete because its replacement is better.

I'm studying moving up from low powered rockets into mid to high powered kits. This book has many tips and instructions that every rocketeer should know before jumping into building bigger kits with bigger motors.

5.0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive reference for the high power rocketeer, February 18, 2007
This review is from: Modern High-Power Rocketry
An Illustrated How-to Guide (Paperback)
This is a great book for those seeking Level 1 through 3 certification. While the hobby has new products and approaches every day, this is a great reference for those seriously looking into high power rocketry. This book and its successor editions may become as essential a reference to the high power rocketeer as the NAR Handbook is to the beginning rocketeer.
