Darrell Scott is an incredible writer, with the ability to tell stories that stay with you. Don't believe me, try "The Man who could've played bass for Sha Na Na" from Theatre of the Unheard, or several of the songs from "The Invisible Man" with its themes of mortality or dying. However, at least in my case, his albums have been a case of half of the songs being spectacular and the other half are an excuse to take a phone call or go to the refrigerator until the next track comes onIn Modern Hymns he salutes incredible songwriters like Guy Clark, Kris Kristofferson, Paul Simon, and Gordon Lightfoot and delivers a wholly satisfying effort, one that shows off fine playing and a great voice. A wholly enjoyable effort, and worth the 14 bucks....

I was listening to "A Prarie Home Companion" a couple of weeks ago and GK was talking with this artist that I 'd never heard of about this album, and then he performed the Paul Simon song that's on it. Blew me away! Then, when I saw his other song choices, I knew I'd like the CD. I haven't been disappointed. I especially like his covers of Joni Mitchell, Gordon Lightfoot, and Leonard Cohen songs. I wish more performers did covers...a great song is a great song, and it's enjoyable to hear different interpretations and voices/arrangements of them.

Even though I love Darrell's songwriting, I feel that his studio albums don't always have the same impact as his live, or less formal, recordings. This one is SOLID, however, and one of the best albums I've heard in a long, long time.

Am not usually impressed with songwriters and performers who re-do the work of others, BUT I do take exception to this one CD. A great collage of past work whose quality has withstood the test of time in the hands of this present performer. Really like it, and will listen to it often I know.

I love the choice of songs and the way that Darrell has presented them on this recording. It's hard to beat Mickey Newbury's version of any of his tunes but boy this one comes close. Lightfoots All the Lovely Ladies ....beautiful ...

This CD has a few amazing songs that I played over and over, but I wish that I could have happily played the CD straight through. A few songs made me cringe.
