I just purchased this book, it looks wonderful. It has the quality of a textbook, but it does not read like a textbook. that is to say it does not drone on and on, it reads well for those who have an interest in modern art. I cover all the periods of modern art and gives concise background to the artists and events of the perod in which the mode of art occurred.
I highly reccomend this book.

This is a solid introduction to the modern painting that tells a little bit about everything and is well illustrated by very good photos 50/50 in proportion to the text. The amount of text is greater than in popular histories of painting making it a bit talkative or - in other words - analytic. The analysis and publishing are good and may satisfy someone willing to explore, but maybe a bit too much for a casual reader. It does not seem to have much of competition in its class of references a notch above popular.

The information in this book and the way it is presented is definitely not lightweight. I am studying interior design, and bought this book for my Modern Art class. The chapters are divided by eras, such as Impressionism, Art Nouveau, and Expressionism. The book covers only the main influential artists of each era, and describes each of them with ample college-level discourse and one or two pictures of their paintings. Think more essay than bulleted notes.

While this book is well-written and seemingly accurate, I would not recommend it if you are looking for an entertaining, leisurely addition to your hobby. If you're a student and looking to buy this book for a class, get ready to leaf through a lot of reading.

What a fantastic book. It broke down each movement and gave you some really great examples of the artists and the work that they have done. It is also a breakdown of the movement and what resulted in the changes and advances in the types and styles of art that was done. We often think that art is done for the sake of doing art but this book gives you some inside information into the movements and the artists behind the movements.

As an art history major, I've seen some really good textbooks and some not so great. This one is not so great. It doesn't engage you -- the text is ridiculously boring. Unless you are required to purchase this text for a class, I'd say don't bother.

Very helpful in my studies as a Docent for an art museum. I have no background in Art History so this is very helpful. It's a typical textbook with tons of color pictures. The text is easy to follow and organized well.
