Gorgeous B&W nudes, February 28, 2008
This review is from: Best of Modern Italian Erotica (Paperback)
Gabriele Rigon presents a wonderful collection of figure photography. It really reminds me why I like B&W photos at least as well as color, sometimes more: when an image contains only light and dark, those two tools work harder in creating a picture's overall presence. The cover gives one dramatic example of the human curves rising from the darkness. Other shots present a figure in silhouette against a lit background, with the model's features barely discernable in shadow, or other riveting kinds of contrast.
Long, clean lines predominate, conveying a classical sense of composition based on the timeless curves of a woman's body. Lingerie appears in a number of compositions, and occasionally another model. Eroticism is often implicit in the young, strong figures chosen. A few times, though, a model's caress of her own figure brings sexuality closer to the front. Paired compositions, with a man or with another woman, move it even closer. There's always something of vicarious pleasure in seeing photos like these - the other model's hand, touching what we can only see, reminds us of how vicarious that really is.
It's easy to enjoy these elegant images. Even when physical affection is most apparent, these photos never descend to crudeness. Coyly placed hands appear in many pictures, avoiding genital details that some will be happy to see avoided. Despite a sameness about the models in coloring, age, and general build, I find this a varied thoughtful collection.
