I find it super annoying when the examples do not match what the book teaches. This is a very basic book, but the CD with its transcribed solos and its comping use techniques that are more advanced and nowhere discussed. All beginning jazz books do this and I think it really does a disservice to the student. A book should lead by example. If the examples make use of certain techniques, those techniques need to be explained. Knocking off stars for this reason.

As far as what it does teach, as I said it's very basic stuff. It's not jazz, it's just basic diatonic harmony. You aren't going to learn how to play jazz by reading it, you'll just learn the preparatory material for any style of music. I don't know why authors insist on such misleading titles as "Intermediate ... Modern Jazz Piano." Realistically it should be called "Basic Preparation for Playing the Keyboard."

Anyway in this regard it does an okay job, it's pretty well organized and straightforward. Adding back a star for that.

Sarah - might I suggest an idea for your next book: Analyze the transcriptions and explain each and every device used on every single bar. All the tritone subs, pieces of passing diminished chords, scales used on substitute chords, anticipations, side-slipping,..... every technique you're using on these songs. THAT would make a great jazz book, something I would give 5 stars and I know many musicans and students would be very keen on.

Great book for getting ideas for jazz improvisation. Contains a lot of very good material for learning jazz concepts including various scales and chord voicings. Comes with a play along CD.

I'm a professional jazz/rock/blues guitarist who plays drums, piano and banjo for fun, all at around a intermediate level. I know the basic jazz voicings on piano, but wanted a book to work through to challenge me a little more, give me some new ideas to work with, and help me with soloing.

This book has been very fun and helpful. Sarah has a very thorough and comprehensive approach to jazz piano. I was able to skip the first twenty pages or so, since I already know theory. Beginning on page 19, the book has you run thru all inversions of the Major, MInor, Diminished, Major 7, 7th, Mi7 and Mi7b5 chords, thru the cycle of 4ths, (a very useful practicing strategy for jazz).

Sarah then runs the chords thru in arpeggio form, ii V I progressions, blues forms, and adds altered and extended tones. There follow sections on walking bass lines, harmonizing melodies, rhythm changes, etc. The book also includes fifteen great recorded performances by sarah, with transcriptions of the head and solos. I find that very helpful, as I don't really need to hear the examples throughout the book, since I'm already familiar with all of the sounds from guitar.

This is not a book for beginners, as it already assumes some skills with fingering and technique. There are no fingerings given throughout the book, and on some of the more advanced single line runs, i would have found them helpful.

In summary, all of the tools for getting started in jazz piano are in this book. With this book, and a Real Book in C, you'll be pretty well set to get started on your jazz piano journey.

I have to say, that it's not exactly clear to me how some of the exercises can be applied. I think a few specific examples would've been helpful; I assume the transcriptions are meant cover that. I'm a retired person learning to play piano, not really able to afford the cost of a teacher so I rely heavily on books. Nice transcriptions, solid cd recording. Of course Sarah's playing excellent.

I am a classical pianist of over 10 years switching to jazz. I didn't know the first thing about jazz, and this was exactly what I needed to UNDERSTAND what jazz entails! All of the basics are covered, I am following the book in order. Learning from this book is within your reach but it's up to you to practice what's there!
