Mildly Interesting, September 17, 2008
This review is from: Modern Marvels - Extreme Gadgets (History Channel) (DVD)
"Extreme Gadgets" begins by following the evolution of surfboards, starting with the second century in Hawaii. Royalty had boards up to 26 feet long and 150 lbs. The 20th century saw a rapid pace of change - 1930s brought hollow boards, 1935 the addition of a stabilizer fin front and rear, in the 1950s came lighter polyurethane boards. Then came "air boards" that actually rose out of the water.
Most of the rest of the disc consists of showing how skateboads, snowboards, mountain-boards, wakeboards, and sky-surfing boards had evolved from the basic surfboard. Unfortunately, the story quickly became obvious and it was difficult to maintain interest.
The one segment that did not derive from surfboards involved mountain bikes. However, this segment had little detail, and again was fairly obvious.
