This review is from: Modern Marvels: Milk (DVD)
The work acknowledges that humans have drank milk for centuries. It includes Egyptian paintings as proof. This whole series is very loose with the term "modern." However, the adjective fits as it's discussed how now machines can increase the availability and health of milk-based products. The programs hits the many points that you would expect. It mentions Louis Pasteur and homogenization. It notes that cows have four stomach-like organs. It never mentions the "R-word," but putting two and two together, since most cows used to make milk in the US are Holstein, originating in Holland, the fact that many non-Europeans are lactose-intolerant may related to their ancestors not drinking that type of cow's milk. It speaks of milk-related products like cheese, yogurt, and stuff. However, it stands out to me that ice cream never comes up. Perhaps they are working on an entire episode devoted to the dessert. The work discusses the healt benefits of milk. I was shocked that it raved about chocolate milk for several reasons. I would assume it's too sugary and has caffeine and wouldn't be championed, but they highly promote it. The work tries to hint at the future of milk. First, small farmers are getting milk from other animals, such as goats and yaks. Second, plants like almond and soy are now being advertised for their milk. How "milk" could come from anything that's not a (female) mammal amazes me. I doubt this program could be enjoyed by little children. However, it could be shown in a health class for junior high or high school students.
