I never leave feedback (terrible, I know) and I order from Amazon regularly, but I had to take the time to comment on this product. I'm an experienced DIY project-doer. Almost all of the furniture in my house has been finished or refinished by yours truly. I have repeatedly run into problems using the standard water-based polyurethane (the kind you can pick up from Lowes, etc) to finish off my painted pieces. Additionally, I like to have low-shine on my painted pieces because the reflection of the shine prevents you from seeing the color of the piece properly, but even the flattest water-based poly you can find at Lowes is still too shiny. I like the look of flat paint when you paint furniture, but not protecting it is an absolute waste of the time you put into painting the furniture in the first place, as paint chips far too easily. Frequently, I've had to scrap an entire project and start over due to the water-based poly not going on correctly--they just don't go on evenly. Additionally, most water-based tend to be tacky, even after days of curing, so that some items you set down on the furniture stick to the coating and ruin the surface.

Then, I found Modern Masters Dead Flat Varnish. What a name! It is amazing. The quality of this varnish is outstanding. It goes on about 100 times better than regular water-based polyurethanes and it dried so smooth, I didn't have to sand between coats. I couldn't believe it. It's also extremely flat (absolutely NO shine) and the final product makes it look like my furniture was done by a professional, rather than myself. There were no brush-stroke lines left when it dried and it cured in half the time water-based polys claim to cure (though I find that they take longer than they claim anyway). I also used this varnish on fully-cured oil-based stains.

I bought this with the hope that this varnish would promise what it advertises: no shine. I just got it yesterday in the mail and like a kid at Christmas opened the box with excited enthusiasm.

I immediately varnished a test piece just to see what would happen. When I painted it on, it was shiny (because it was wet). Nearly 40 minutes later, it settled to a perfectly FLAT finish. NO shine what-so-ever.

I read a review in this thread about someone who used it on an already satin-varnished piece so I decided to try it myself. I painted this varnish on an item that I had already varnished with a satin finish. To my surprise, it completely flattened the finish of the previous sheen. WOW!

I'm impressed. So if you're looking for no shine, you'll find it with this varnish. Oh, and I should also note that it was delivered to me in record time.

:)

My husband and I are avid Do-It-Yourself home re-modelers and have been doing projects together for many years! After having terrible experiences with varnish products from Home Depot and Lowe's (gummy/nasty after fully dried, wears off easily, shiny finish etc...) I went online to find the perfect, extremely durable flat varnish (because that looks so very professional to me) and came across this product featured on a couple of Do-It-Yourself television shows. I found a local store to purchase it from and got some right away. My husband and I were remodeling our kitchen and decided to keep our extremely outdated honey oak cabinets as they were in great condition. After being inspired by shows on DIY and HGTV, we decided to match the black specks in our new granite and paint all of the cabinets black (I know this sounds odd but it looks wonderful.) We used the dead flat varnish and WOW, it looks amazing. We have had so many people compliment us on our beautiful cabinets that I have lost count, lol:) Our cabinets look like high end furniture pieces! I honestly thought they looked a lot like furniture sold @ Ethan Allen! The varnish is dead flat which looks fantastic and is amazingly durable! We completed our remodeling job about a year and a half ago, have 5 Children and the cabinets still look awesome! I recommend @ least 3 coats to kid-proof your projects!!! We are now building a Farmhouse Table and Bench set and again we will be using this varnish to finish our project with! This product is a bit pricy but very much worth every extra penny!

This varnish is amazing!! i made a coffee table out of reclaimed boat wood. I lightly sanded it but couldn't do much since the natural grey-ing of the wood was what I really liked about it. I needed something to seal it so I could wipe it down and not get splinters every time i touched it! I also wanted to retain that nice natural grey quality and not add any shine. A reclaimer told me about this and it turned out perfectly!! You can't see that there's anything on the wood at all! but its perfectly sealed. I used a regular paint brush to apply.

On some pieces of furniture that I've refinished in a painted --- but antiqued, hand-rubbed look --- I've tried to keep the finished look as matte or unshiny as possible. I've even gone without a protective finish in some instances simply because I didn't want to lost that flat look.

But some pieces absolutely require additional protective clear coats. For instance, I refinished a beautiful old dresser with various decorative painting techniques and loved the way it looked. However it was planned as the base for a lovely crafted bowl sink to sit atop in our powder room. I knew that it would get the occasional splattering of water from the faucet or just-washed hands --- and I really didn't want to have to run in every time someone used the powder room and dry off the dresser top. I considered heavily waxing the surface, but that's not always fully protective...plus it would add a bit more sheen or luster than I wanted.

I decided to give this water-based Dead Flat Varnish by Modern Masters a try and I was quite pleased. I only put a couple of coats on the overall furniture piece; but I gave the top surface a total of four coats. It dried clear and streak-free...and is definitely "dead flat." This varnish is only water-RESISTANT rather than water-proof, so I am still careful to not let water puddle or sit for long stretches of time. With this being an infrequently-used powder room, it hasn't been an issue.

It also comes in an exterior version.
