4.0 out of 5 stars Informative and fun to read reference guide to modern military aviation., April 2, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Modern Military Aircraft Anatomy (Hardcover)
A worthy companion volume to "Aircraft Anatomy of WWII" by the same authors. Filled with detailed 3-D "blueprints", plenty of color photos, and brief specification summaries of most military aircrafts since 1945, this volume DOESN'T disappoint.

The book is divided into the following sections: Attack Aircraft, Bombers, Fighters, Helos, Naval Aircraft, Recon, Trainers, Transport and Tanker. Many modern warbirds are depicted: A-10 Warthog, IAI Kfir, P-80 Shooting Star, F-86 Sabre, MiG-15 to 29 (Fulcrum), Sukhoi Su-7 to 27(Flanker), A-4 Skyhawk, A-6 Intruder, F-104 Starfighter, F-105 Thud, F-4 Phantom, F-14 Tomcat, F-15 Eagle, F-16 Fighting Falcon, F-18 Hornet, SR-71 Blackbird, B-2, F-117, etc.......Some of the more famous aircrafts have cutaways for multiple variants, e.g., Dassault Mirage series. Other lesser known aircrafts like the De Havilland D.H. 110 Sea Vixen, Casa C.101 Aviojet, and Kamov Ka-25/27 Hormone helos are also included.

Overall a very entertaining reference book with superb 3-D cutaway diagrams (some in color) and pics that will please most aviation enthusiasts. The only minor negative is the small print which may cause some eyestrain with extended unmagnified reading. This book is readily available at a good price from many Amazon Markeplace booksellers.

4.0 out of 5 stars Is this really where the engine is?... I would never have told..., February 10, 2009
This review is from: Modern Military Aircraft Anatomy (Hardcover)
I really like this book, for is full of facts instead of words, especially it lacks the usual ranting of the so-called "experts"; what you find inside is a neatly arranged sequence of aircraft (fixed and rotary wing) new and old, wonderfully showed in their cutaway views and with full specs.
To see something similar you must buy the Jane's All the World's Aircraft but - trust me - it's not worth the price you'll pay for it.

I give this book 4 stars out of 5 only because of its "strange arrangement" regarding the classifying of the various aircraft types.
What I'm trying to explain is that I found questionable the positioning of some kind of aircraft in the various sections labeled attack, fighters, bombers, naval, reconnaissance, helicopters, transports & tankers.

For example, I always knew that the Republic F-105 Thunderchief was a fighter-bomber while the F-86 Sabre was an air superiority fighter... well you can find the Sabre under the "attack aircraft chapter" and the Thunder under "fighters"... and they're not the only example as you can find the Dassault Mirage 2000 (an interceptor/air superiority craft in the French Armeé de l'Air) listed as an attack craft, while the light bomber Sukhoi Su-17/22 is showed in the "fighters" section of the book.

This said, the only other criticism (but a very minor one) is the lack of such mainstay as the F/A-18 Hornet or the venerable MiG-15 but you can't really expect to have the full range of the modern aircrafts in a 250 pages book.

If you're looking for a serious book with a lot of data and some beautifully rendered technical drawings (and a lot of very good pictures, all in colors) this is the one for you and it came pretty cheap also...
