3.0 out of 5 stars a fair textbook, December 17, 2007
By
This book as a one of the few modern Mongolia textbooks out there in the market does do a good job presenting basic Mongolian grammatical concepts, with a plus since it has an accompanying cassette. However, this book does not do a thorough job in laying out Mongolian grammar and it has many typos which are really irritating. In comparison Colloquial Mongolian is a better book both in terms of presenting Mongolian language, culture and the price of the book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Introduction But Lacking, August 18, 2007
By
This review is from: Modern Mongolian: A Course-Book (Paperback)
I am living in Darhan, Mongolia, and have been doing full-time Mongolian language study for 8 months. I ordered and used this book as part of my language studies. This book gives a good introduction to Mongolian and it helps to have some grammatical explanations in English. The exercises in the book are good for practice. However, the book is insufficient for learning Mongolian fully, either spoken or written. There are some errors in the book - grammtical and the use of some endings (suffixes). This book helps as an introduction to the language and gives an overview of some basics, but as said, is not sufficient to really learn the language.

4.0 out of 5 stars Best Book Out There, September 4, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Modern Mongolian: A Course-Book (Paperback)
I can honestly say that having been in Mongolia a few months now this has been the most helpful to study. I would have given it a 5 had the fact you can't get the audio accompaniment anywhere. Hearing how the words are said would make this even better. I also know having lived here some words aren't actually pronounced the way they suggest but that's a failure of every other book I've tried.

I love the fact words are mixed and not based on topics. The grammar rules pronunciation is packed at the beginning so you see it over and over again as you progress. Everyone learns differently but for me this was the most helpful.
