Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Gr 5-9-Collapsing several millennia into a survey that is both succinct and readable is a daunting task, but Foster succeeds admirably. Her overview of dates, names, and events-from Ice Man to the Euro-is balanced by insets and quotations dealing with popular culture, making this both a good starting point for reports as well as a fine resource for general readers. Chapters on geography, achievements, and daily life frame the chronological portions; the latter take a revisionist approach to history, with unfamiliar terms defined in context. Power is shown to be multifaceted and quixotic, shifting among emperor, pope, and general, but more firmly entrenched with the Mafia and the Mamma. The black-and-white illustrations are largely stock images, but they are clearly reproduced, and the captions are informative. Reference tools include a facts page, endnotes, and an annotated bibliography and list for further reading. Libraries on a tight budget and already owning Jane K. Winter's Italy (Benchmark, 1995) may need to pass on this one; it covers a lot of the same ground. Those with more flexibility (or those who only have some of the more pedestrian series titles) will want to snap this up faster than a Ferrari on the autostrada.-Wendy Lukehart, Dauphin County Library, Harrisburg, PA

Review

"The book details the country's climate, geography, agriculture, industry, daily life in both rural and urban areas, and arts and culture. The book features maps, black-and-white photographs, and special boxes...The book's final pages offer a set of facts-at-a-glance, a detailed chronology, an annotated bibliography including works for both children and adults, an annotated list of works consulted (including web sites), and an index."
-- Multi-Cultural Review (March 2001) (MultiCultural Review )

"Libraries seeking solid, lasting references for their geography section will want to include...these additions... the Modern Nations of the World series provides important overviews and information on the history and politics of the countries with black-and-white photos peppering the accounts."

By A Customer
This review is from: Modern Nations of the World - Italy (Hardcover)
This book has great historical information and facts. If I had to do a report on Italy, this is a book that I would want to use for the report. This is a good book for students and teachers alike.
