The Silent Service..., June 19, 2011
This review is from: Modern U. S. Navy Submarines (Enthusiast Color) (Paperback)
Robert and Robin Genat's 1997 "Modern US Navy Submarines" might seem a bit dated, but it offers a terrific inside look at the US Navy's silent service and its submariners. Fortunately, the Los Angeles, Ohio, and Seawolf classes of submarine all remain in service, so the content is still very relevant.
The Genat's have combined pictures and honest, thoughtful narrative into an easy-reading and highly informative look at US Navy submarines, breaking out the topics by chapters on attack subs, ballistic missile subs, the then-new Seawolf class, training, and living on a submarine. The photography is stunningly good, and the average reader should come away with a much better sense of the capabilities of submarines, and the challenges and rewards of serving abroad these unique vessels.
"Modern US Navy Submarines" is highly recommended to the general reader as an introduction to the subject of US submarines.
