I found this volume to be a terrific survey of philosophers and their thinking from 1500 up to the present. The editors begin with philosophy in the Renaissance and progress through the Enlightenment and on through up to the 20th century. Every philosophical heavyweight from this period is covered to some extent, and some receive more attention than others. The subjects receive some biographical coverage and more extensive discussion of their philosophies. The explanation of Kant's thinking is the clearest that I have read. In reading this volume, the reader sees the progress and development of philosophy in general, and in particular how one strain of thought is in response or reaction to another strain of thought. A very good volume to receive a quick but meaningful introduction to modern contributors to the discipline.
