This review is from: Modern Poets of France: A Bilingual Anthology (French Edition) (Paperback)
If you can read French without hesitation, you don't need this book. However, if you read French with a certain nagging anxiety over your full comprehension, this bi-lingual anthology of modern French poetry will be a godsend. Translator Louis Simpson, a poet himself, has rendered the French poems with directness and simplicity, not intruding any particular style yet achieving sufficient elegance to be readable as poetic prose.
The poets included as "modern" begin with Hugo and Nerval. Baudelaire, Verlaine, Apollinaire, Breton, Eluard, and other well-known poets are included, along with lesser known writers such as Pierre Reverdy, Georges Ribemont-Dessaignes, and Benjamin Peret. An excellent tool for learning French as well as an introduction to the delights of French poetry! |
