If you think quilting is for fuddy-duddys, get hold of this book and change your mind! This book has by far the best layout and design of any quilt book I've seen (and I own hundreds).

3.0 out of 5 stars Great information, not so great designs.
If you are a beginning quilter (I am) then the information and techniques in this book are fabulous and generously shared. Since design is totally subjective you may like the designs, especially if you are trying something aside from traditional quilting. I, however, did not. For comparison sake, I like the designs of Denise Schmidt and LOVE the book "Last minute...

If you think quilting is for fuddy-duddys, get hold of this book and change your mind! This book has by far the best layout and design of any quilt book I've seen (and I own hundreds).

The quilts look complicated but they really aren't - and if you're nervous, start with one of the "easy" ones at the front of the book. Each quilt pattern is given in multiple sizes (Wall through to Queen) with a beautiful photo and clear illustrations and text, as well as clear cutting intructions and a table which makes it easy to see how many pieces to cut.

The authors encourage you to experiment, and show how each quilt could look in other colour choices. There's even hints on catching any potential design disasters before they happen.

This is my new favourite quilt book and I would recommend it for ANYONE - even advanced quilters will find new and challenging design opportunities sparked by this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT book! :), August 2, 2005

I got this book along with "Denyse Schmidt Quilts: 30 Colorful Quilt And Patchwork Patterns" and well honestly I got this book just for the free shipping. I can not believe it, I loved this book WAY more then the Denyse book (which I gave 2 stars).

The Modern Quilt Workship is just a wealth of information. Great quilting tips, and just really neat projects with great instructions. I started quilting in december, taught myself, having never used a sewing machine before. I am very paticular and like very clear insutrctions. This book is GREAT, with totally ultra hip patterns to boot :) I learned stuff just skimming this book when it first arrived.

This is the most amazing quilting book. The patterns are beautiful and don't have that country look like most of the others. The directions are very clear and there are suggestions for changes in the designs as well as helpful information on what types of materials work best. I highly rec this book.

I have a lot of quilting books/magazines on techniques and on patterns and this one provided NEW information. First off, the authors do not recommend adding a quilt border, just because you need to add a border. They ask that you decide if a border is needed. They also showed their 'one-step binding' method and also the tradidtional binding method, which is in all of the other books/magazines.

The patterns are also wonderful and ordered from simple to complex. They have a completed quilt and also pictures of the quilt using different colors to demonstrate how color affected the 'mood' of the quilt. They encourage you to select your own colors.

I haven't started on these quilt patterns but plan to try out some of their techniques on my next project.

Note: there are no applique quilts here.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best quilt/art book EVER!!!, May 26, 2005
This review is from: The Modern Quilt Workshop: Patterns, Techniques, and Designs from the FunQuilts Studio (Paperback)
the book arrived at my house last night and although I haven't tackled any of the amazing and do-able projects in it, I 've read it cover-to-cover already. I couldn't put it down! If you are someone who is interested in starting to quilt or has a lifetime of experience, you need this book! Highly recommended.

There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe how inspiring and beautiful and fun this modern quilt book is. Buy it now and you will not be disappointed. The authors not only provide detailed construction instructions on 15 quilts, these quilts are nothing like the fussy tired designs too prevelant in most other quilt books. These are bold and sassy and fun (hense their company name: FunQuilts) and New. The authors also provide lessons on nearly each page on how to choose colors and fabrics to inspire us, the readers, to plan and design our own quilt creations, not merely copy their beautiful designs and color combinations. In the acknowledgements the authors say they had planned to write a design book, but instead were pursuaded by their students to write a book "explain[ing] our thinking about quiltmaking." And they have. This is much more than just another quilt pattern book. With Kerr and Ringle you get design lessons and inspiration and encouragement to create your own beautiful, modern, quilt.

I was so looking forward to getting my hands on this book and was not disappointed when it arrived! Clear, easy to follow instructions, AWESOME patterns (three I want to make immediately, lol!), and wonderful writing make this a superb addition to any quilt library. There is something for every skill level from beginner to advanced and many colour variations included to get you thinking and planning. A definite new favourite.

It's not often we see a team of husband and wife quilters but here they are.
There book will challenge all quilters.
Contained within its pages are projects that are hip and up-to-date -- certainly not your traditional idea of what quilting is supposed to be all about.
If you're looking for a book that offers you interesting quilting challenges, then this is the book for you. It's great!!!
I'd definitely recommend it to all quilters of every level of ability.

I found this an excellent book for contemporary quilts. The patterns and the colors will fit in a contemporary setting and are not "fussy" as so many of the quilts are. I highly recommend it.
