Review

The emphasis is rightly on tumour diagnosis...particularly successful in sections on the diagnosis of non-neoplastic disordersThe clinical context is well-covered.
--British Medical Association Annual Book Awards: First Prize, Neurology

"a unique contribution to the field of surgical neuropathology...like having a seasoned, expert consultant on-call at the microscope on the desktop." "Contains the most comprehensive discussion of epilepsy neuropathology I have seen" -American Journal of Surgical Pathology

"The intended target audience is practicing pathologists and trainees, especially those who are not experienced in the handling and diagnostic approach to neuropathological entities. Neurosurgeons will gain valuable and practical insights into the practice of neuropathology detailed in this book. Experienced neuropathologists will also benefit from the carefully considered, yet sometimes controversial topics the author explores. Dr. Miller, now clinical professor of pathology and anatomical sciences at the University of Missouri, Columbia, has outstanding credentials. He has published widely on neurosurgical topics during his 28-plus year career at academic centers recognized for their neurosurgical and neuropathological excellence, notably Massachusetts General Hospital and New York University Medical Center, opportunities that provided high-volume, exceptional quality, and diverse neurosurgical specimens....The working guide approach, written in the author's thought-provoking style with in-depth analyses of many complex issues relating to neuropathological diagnosis, distinguishes this book from several current popular neuropathology texts."

I am an Attending Neuropathologist in New York City in a large academic hospital. In the past there were excellent reference books to turn to. However, the field has rapidly advanced and I now find myself turning to the recent 2009 publication by Dr. Miller. "Modern Surgical Neuropathology" covers the most current neurosurgical disorders and includes all relevant information for appropriate diagnostic work-up and differential diagnosis. Dr. Miller has painstakingly included an amazing array of images essential to any good pathology reference book. Neuropathology publications tend to be pricey, yet this publication is a real bargain given the amount of useful information and the included CD with its descriptive illustrations. The illustrations alone are worth the price and come in handy when preparing presentations in an academic practice. I highly recommend this book to practicing Neuropathologists and general Anatomic Pathologists in need of a quick reference for CNS disorders.

A worthy successor to the excellent surgical neuropathology books by Peter Burger, this is sure to become a new standard in the field. It's great having a CD with downloadable images to use in presentations. Reads very well. Highly recommended.

By P. J. Kelly MD on January 13, 2011
Format: Hardcover
As an academic neurosurgeon with a long-standing interest in brain tumors, epilepsy and brain biopsy, I am well aware of Dr. Miller's excellent reputation as an honest, world-class neuropathologist, teacher and neuroscientist. But of all of his contributions to his field, this book has to be the greatest. It is superb! In my opinion Modern Surgical Neuropathology will and should become the definitive text on surgical neuropathology. It is profusely illustrated with high quality color photographs and clearly describes state of the art procedures, special stains and current thinking on the pathology of a variety of neurological diseases. Most important, it is written by an author who has practiced his art "in the trenches" as the of chief of neuropathology at an institution with very busy Departments of Neurosurgery and Neurology where he worked closely with clinicians and taught residents and medical students. Fortunately, Dr Miller can also write very well. His book is beautifully written, fun to read, and belongs on the bookshelf of any serious neurosurgeon, neurologist, pathologist, medical student and anyone else interested in the study of neurological diseases. In addition, for the academic, the enclosed CD is a "gold mine" for illustrations that can be used in "PowerPoint" lectures for students, residents and colleagues which, I confess, I've already tapped into! I highly recommend this book.

This book provides a comprehensive and up-to-date survey of diagnostic surgical neuropathology. The text includes all pertinent information on the state of the art and - in addition - facts and insight beyond the often encountered stereotypical descriptions of histopathologic findings in other textbooks. All chapters are well illustrated with images of gross pathology, histology, special stains, immunohistochemistry, EM and radiographs. Particularly helpful for study and training purposes is the impressive collection of macroscopic pathology findings in both neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases.
Among the few recent books of its kind this textbook sets itself apart by the fact that it is a single-author textbook. As such, it is not only a reference textbook to be consulted for specific diagnostic problems, but it can also be read cover to cover for study purposes or the pure pleasure of reading a well-written and coherent text in the field.
