Book Description

April 1, 2009

Inspired by traditional tribal tattoos, this collection of new artwork is an excellent sourcebook for bold and interesting designs from a range of cultural and historical sources. This reference features a wide variety of styles—from the fine line work of henna patterns to black work patterns that incorporate large solid areas to motifs, such as totems, talismans, and free–form designs—combined with repeating elements, including triangles, spirals, suns, and barbed wire, to create body art that makes a bold visual statement of individuality that is rooted in traditional tattoo art. Additional information on the symbolism and meaning associated with the attributes of each tattoo is included to make this a comprehensive sourcebook on tribal tattoo art.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Irish understands what tattoo artists need and what tattoo collectors want. From her solid line drawings to her bold use of color and shading, her work is an excellent addition to any artist's reference library."  —Art & Ink Magazine

"This book is perfect for the tattoo aficionado, artist or anyone looking to make a statement."  —Rebel Ink

"A collection of neo-tribal designs that shows many of the qualities that artists look for in their designs, such as love, strength, and loyalty."  —Urban Ink

"Lora Irish has gone to some painstaking trouble in the composition of this book and she manages to step outside the realms of the trite and overdone patterns that are often encountered, resulting in many intricate and interesting motifs. The opening pages provide a truly a excellent tutorial in how to approach the creation of custom designs . . . Overall this is a great tool."  —Skin Deep Magazine

1.0 out of 5 stars Horrible, just horrible!, December 18, 2009
This review is from: Modern Tribal Tattoo Designs (Paperback)
I don't care what the quoted reviews say, this book is terrible.

I have been a tattoo artist for ten years and NEVER have I seen such horribly designed "tribal" designs. Most are extremely dense, overly complicated pieces that would not fit the body well at all. A good tribal tattoo is meant to accentuate the anatomy of the body, and follow the musculature of the wearer. In short, a well designed "tribal" tattoo should flow.

It is painfully obvious that Ms. Irish is not a tattoo artist. In fact, she is a wood carver, and has written many books about that. Well, I am here to tell you that woodcarving designs do NOT make for good tattoo designs. It is also obvious that she has no knowledge of the history or origin of so called "tribal" tattooing, which can be easily found in "Tattoo History-A Sourcebook" by Steve Gilbert.

I suggest that Ms. Irish should "Google" the father of modern "tribal" tattooing, Leo Zulueta, and study his work. I also suggest that she should pick up a copy of Tattoo Time, specifically, the issue "New Tribalism", as well as the book "Marks of Civilization", by Arnold Rubin. Look at the tribal designs in those two works, then compare them to the stuff in Irish's book. Actually, there is no comparison.

This book is a waste of time.
