1.0 out of 5 stars Make sure you buy the right book
The $20 paperback is actually a lab manual, NOT a paperback version on the $70 text book!

The lab manual is full of questions and exercises but is useless without the full companion text.

Be sure you order the actual book you want!

As a welding amateur, this book expanded my knowledge of the subject tremendously. The text is oriented more towards commercial and industrial welding that amateur welding.

One subject that is not covered that would have been most helpful is the electrical needs of welding equipment and how they are or can be met.

5.0 out of 5 stars All that I needed and much more than I expected, December 24, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Modern Welding (Hardcover)
This book is essential for the novice (like me) because you get everything from instruction to reference material. It contains safety information, step-by-step instructions and reference material that a novice may never be able to find otherwise (such as recommended initial dynamic pressures for various tips and actual color pictures flames from different gas mixtures). There are some typos and it's a little tough finding certain things by index, but you should be reading the whole section anyway. You should certainly read this book before purchasing any equipment or performing any welding at all; it could save your paycheck, your project or even save your life!

5.0 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know about welding, November 23, 1996
By A Customer
This review is from: Modern Welding (Hardcover)
If you want to repair bridges, make a chastity belt or simply want to learn something about welding, then this is the book you should purchase. Modern Welding is well organized and profusely illustrated. There is a wealth of detail in this book which should satisfy everyone from the professional welder to the backyard craftman.

I was seized by an irrational desire to do some welding. I wanted a "how to" book that would explain how to do cutting and welding safely. Modern Welding explains every step in the welding process in a clear and concise manner. There are many illustrations which further clarify the text. For those readers with a professional bent, there are chapters on print reading, inspectioin, setting up a shop and getting and holding a job.

I purchased some used oxyactylene equipment and shortly after the book arrived from Amazon Books, I was making sparks fly in the back yard. I thoroughly recommend this clearly written and beautifully illustrated book.

As a welding business owner, I highly recommend this book to anyone deciding to weld for a career. This book is a text book, which may or not be in schools as we speak, but should be. Get started SAFELY in any type of welding: Gas, Mig, Tig, or Stick. Use this book to fill in any gaps in basic formal training (such as from a local Community College, which is highly recommended for learning proper techniques) or knowledge. The book is filled with outstandingly detailed illustrations, tables and pictures that cover the different machine particulars, proper set ups and hand movement techniques that will allow anyone to produce consistantly strong welds on just about any material. Check it out: this book has so much information, and is layed out in such a way that it is easily worth twice the asking price!

If you know some basic welding and want a book to expand your knowledge, or a reference book for an experienced welder, this is it. I'm not saying you can't learn to weld starting from this book--you could. What a beginner might want, that is not here, are lots of pictures of good welds vs. bad welds. But if you know enough to know you need to improve, or if you are an experienced welder, this book will help you in several ways. It goes into great detail on selecting equipment (from basic to specialized), setting it up and operating it.

* It covers almost ANY kind of welding you would ever run across, including but certainly not limited to: gas welds, cutting and brazing; stick, TIG, and MIG; plasma; spot welding; machine and automated welding, etc.

* Comprehensive list of charts for setting up and using every kind of equipment and for various base metals, thicknesses, fillers metals, etc.

* "How to" techniques for proper manipulation of every kind of equipment presented.

* The best feature is detailed theory on WHY things happen in each technique being taught. This allows you to think for yourself when needed, rather than monkey-see-monkey-do presentation. You will make informed decisions on what to use and how to use it for the best result in most any situation.

The presentations are not over-your-head complicated, yet they include most anything an advancing or skilled welder would want to know. I was impressed with the balance.

The book is comprehensive, well organized, and easy to understand. As a hands-on property manager often called upon to weld throughout my life, this book gives me complete confidence in what I am doing. I use it to teach my guys who have never welded, and they can refer to it before each job. I doubt I will ever buy another welding book.
