with this late produccion oviedo stablis himself as a inventive smooth jazzist. Good arrangement, beatiful melodies and a perfect sound. This is music to listen for and to make youself feeling the magic of colours sounds.

The Modern World by Ray Obiedo is a wonderful Modern Day music CD. More than just smooth Jazz. With a hints of Cool, Smooth, Jazz, and Latin. I really dig how Ray plays his instrument. The Music was recorded with nice soundstage and will sound great on high end systems. This music has something that makes you want to sit. listen and enjoy. I have enjoyed Rays music and will continue to look forward to his work in the future.

Living in the SF Bay area I have been able to hear Ray Obiedo live for many years. He and the quality musicians he attracts are something special to my heart and mind. I love the concept that he has created... it makes my heart sing. The current album hits the mark. When I picked it up at the jazz festival his son was man-ing the table selling cd's and man what a great kid. He showed a wonderful liveliness and enthusiasm that reflects on his mother and dad. For my money anything from the Obiedo "tribe" is golden. Also, check out Sticks and Stones for the phenomenal work of Kenny Kirkland.

I find some of the songs on the album refreshing. In contrast to the previous albums heard from other artists, Ray, comes into the scene with an improvisation all his own. Of course, not every artist isn't a Peter White, Brian Culbertson, David Sanborn or an Everette Harp. I see there is a difference for Ray here in this album. His percussion here in the album is smooth and makes me want to move. Songs like, Carousel, Modern World and Never move me well when I am listening to them. I like it.

At times when music is reviewed we as "public" reviewers tend to forget what genre music we are reviewing or perhaps are expecting something else to be heard from what we are listening to. Such is a dilemma with "smooth "Jazz. Labelled as Jazz could be a misnomer, in which lies the dilemma. But saying that, on the other hand there are varying levels or styles of " Jazz" and this type of music that Mr. Obiedo offers definitely falls into the smooth Jazz category, as it so is called. Nothing more, nothing less. So it is unfair to give a poor rating on an artist`s work after listening expecting to hear something which the artist in question is not the style he/she is presenting, or maybe what the artist wants to present to his buying fans. Ray Obiedo presents Latin influenced smooth Jazz. Just nice rhythmic, mostly instrumental, melodious, tuneful, at times subdued "Jazz" music. Which if your a Smooth Jazz listener you should enjoy.
