4.0 out of 5 stars wide scope, February 18, 2008
This review is from: Modernism (Contexts) (Paperback)
Granted, Matthews' tale is somewhat short, given its ambitious scope. In it, he attempts to explain the rise of the Modernist literary movement, from the end of the Belle Epoque of the 1890s to the 1920s. He locates writers in part within the context of certain key cities. London, Paris, Dublin and New York. All the big names of the time are here. James Joyce, T S Eliot, Ezra Pound and others.

Within the New York scene, he does not neglect the Harlem Renaissance, with the rise of talented Negro writers finding a welcoming locale.

The effect of the Great War on Modernism is explored. Its shattering death tolls were a very real thing to the writers.
