This is an excellent volume of Mandelstam's work - highly recommended. The introduction (written by Kevin Platt) very helpfully situates Mandelstam's life and work in its historical context, and the poems themselves are offered in the best translations available. About half of the poems are presented in the previously-published translations of Meares or Brown/Merwin, while the other half are printed here in new translations (trans. by Ostashevsky, Bernstein, Perelman, and Platt), each offering more precise translations drawing from the most up-to-date Mandelstam scholarship.This is an excellent collection of poems from one of the 20th-century's deepest poets. |
