Book Description

April 30, 1992
This landmark study of American religion, recipient of the National Religious Book Award in 1976, is being brought back into print with an updated bibliography. The Modernist Impulse in American Protestantism traces the history of American Protestant thought from the early part of the nineteenth century to the present. William R. Hutchison deals especially with the "modernist" movement that flourished in the years around 1900, and with the colorful personalities and disputes associated with that movement.

"A landmark volume. . . . Those interested in the history of American thought or religion in general can ill afford to neglect it."—Martin E. Marty

Review

"Modernization" has been a favorite theme of historians and social scientists for some time. The Modernist impulse or movement was American Protestantism's most organized effort to address and interpret the theme. Remarkably, no serious historian has previously given an accounting of this Modernism. I am happy to say that the first reasonably comprehensive word on the subject, this book by William Hutchison, more than fulfils the expectations many of us are bringing to it. I would not be surprised if it turns out to be regarded as a landmark volume, since Hutchison's way of organizing the narrative will almost certainly set the terms for subsequent research and writing. Those interested in the history of American thought or of religion in general can ill afford to neglect it. (Martin E. Mary ) --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
