Editorial Reviews

Review

“The Boyd Collection is one of the most comprehensive and important 20th century modernist furniture collections in private hands today. Although the individual pieces are museum-worthy, the Boyds have committed to living with the entire collection, inspired by the revolutionary spirit of modernism and its credo that good design can engender beautiful living. The collection is dazzlingly displayed in a mid-century California masterpiece designed by Brazilian modern Oscar Niemeyer, his only North American residential design.” ~Rosewood

“The Modernist paradise in question is the Boyd Collection, a mother lode of twentieth-century furniture housed in Oscar Niemeyer’s only North American residence… The book is a lush, glossy tribute to the museum-quality collection, which also includes historic paintings, posters, books, and household accessories.” ~Metropolis

“The word collector takes on new meaning with Michael and Gabrielle Boyd. Together, the two have amassed thousands of pieces of 20th-century furniture, objects and abstract art. In Modernist Paradise (Rizzoli), the two take on the ultimate project: restoring Brazilian architect Oscar Niermeyer’s only American house and grounds to their original design. Photographed by Tim Street-Porter and written by Michael Webb, the book provides the ultimate fix for any 20th-century furniture fetishist.” ~Riviera

“This attractive book tells a rich story… Tim Street-Porter’s photographs capture modern milestones by Marcel Breuer, Josef Hoffman, Arne Jacobsen, Finn Jule, Adolf Loos, George Nelson, Jean Prouve, Gerrit Rietveld,  and Otto Wagner as well as Niemeyer himself…” ~Interior Design

This is one of my favorite book on my shelves at home. I flipped through this book at the bookstore and couldn't wait to order it from Amazon and get it home. The photographs are amazing and the writing is superb. As a mid-century modern furniture collector for the past 10 years, i can completely relate to the Boyd's fascination and appreciation for one of the best era in furniture designs. Although my collection will NEVER be as impressive as the Boyd's during this life time or any other life time for that matter, it is still very inspiring to see people preserving true masterpieces. I was fortunate enough to get to see some of Michael Boyd's collection on loan to the Orange County Museum here in Newport Beach last year. This book is a must for any one who appreciates great designs and architectures. A must have.

I have been in the O.N. house and have contributed a few pieces to the collection of Michael and Gabriele Boyd. To me, it is the perfect house in design and functionality. The collection of early industrial design to mid century modern or simply put - from Breuer to Prouve and Eames. This book describes one of the best modern collections worldwide and offers pieces that any museum can envy along with the house that frees your spirit of unuseful clutter and lets you create. The house and functionality is in detail and written I invite anyone to enjoy this book for it is the best pictured private collection in a truly deserving setting. The effort and determination of M & G Boyd to renovate the O.N. house have paid off and as the book shows, they deserve every credit imaginable for it. What a house and outstanding modern collection. This book is a must have for any collector of modern industrial design, architectual design and good taste. Enough said... Just buy it and enjoy.
Thank you for the book Michael & Gabriele. -
