Modesty Blaise is a female comic character that does not receive the publicity that she deserves. A woman of action and integrity with a criminal past, Modesty willingly walks into danger with the confidence of a James Bond. She has a male sidekick named Willie Garvin, but they are not lovers, they are deep friends with a mutual love of adventure and when one needs the other, there is no hesitation in responding.
There are four Modesty Blaise adventures in this collection: *) "The Black Pearl" - Modesty, Willie and another male companion embark on a journey from India into Chinese occupied Tibet to retrieve "The Black Pearl", a device that will be used to identify the tenth high lama. *) "The Magnified Man" - Modesty, Willie and the British and French officials try to thwart the efforts of a master criminal mind as he tries to steal a massive gold shipment from a train. *) "The Jericho Caper" - in an attempt to get away for a while, Modesty goes to a remote village in Central America. However, when a gang of thugs come to the village and make off with some young women, Modesty decides to go after them. She contacts Willie and he parachutes into the jungle to aid her. *) "The Killing Ground" - an old adversary of Modesty and Willie arranges to have them drugged and kidnapped. They are set down on an island where three master hunters will hunt them. Modesty Blaise is a heroine that knows no fear, has a strong sense of right and wrong and has the most loyal of sidekicks in Willie Garvin. She is a force to be reckoned with in the comic book world, a role model for females that in many ways is even better than Wonder Woman. For Modesty has no magic lasso, robot plane or super strength, she gets hurt and must rely on her intelligence and fighting ability.
