4.0 out of 5 stars If You Like It, You'll Love It!, May 19, 2009
This review is from: Modesty Blaise: The Lady Killers (Modesty Blaise (Graphic Novels)) (Paperback)
It helps if you're already a Modesty Blaise fan. If you are, you *know* you like these strips! Just think of a freelance Secret Agent, like James Bond or John Drake, but having the independence to act freely. The stories are "procedurals," with a lot of focus on details. If you aren't (yet!) a Blaise fan then you perhaps would be better off beginning at the beginning. But for the daring and doughty, hey, dive right in! You're coming in to the middle of a vast cycle of mythic stories, and you won't immediately know who everyone is. For some, that's disorienting. But the Blaise adventures are "stand alone" as well as part of a larger epic/mythic cycle. "The Lady Killers" (one of the three stories in this collection) is one of the best Blaise stories ever. The plot is intricate, and the villain is memorable. "Garvin's Travels" is over-the-top goofy cold-war spy nonsense, literally gigantic in scope; the unravelling of the plot is magnificent. "Dossier on Pluto" is the weakest of the three stories, and yet it gives the most insight into Modesty's character. In fact, all three stories, taken together, suggest that her name ought to be "Loyalty" and not "Modesty." Readable, re-readable, re-re-readable!

Excellent plot lines, character development, setting, artwork and more. The best action comic strip of the '60s through the '90s! I own the entire set of some 15 volumes; I started reading (and cutting out and saving!) the strips in the last '70s, until I left for college in the mid-'80s, where I discovered that there were reprints (Viking Press at the time).
