About the Author

The author, Steven Kennedy, grew up in Plainville, CT, in the 1960s. Plainville was home to the Plainville Stadium, a quarter mile flat asphalt track that featured modifieds as the main division. Kennedy began attending races with his dad in 1970, and began shooting photos later that year with a Kodak Brownie instamatic box camera. He also began the habit of collecting photos the same year, buying photos from the track photographer Phil Hoyt. Kennedy eventually got his first 35 mm camera in 1973, and began traveling to other Connecticut race tracks that featured the modifieds, like Thompson and Stafford Speedways. He began writing for the magazine Prospeed Revue during that time, then took a job at the Waterford Speedbowl as the track photographer, a position he held until 1982, when he began a career as a professional artist. He still shoots at the Waterford Speedbowl for Racedog photographyÆs Keith Cyr and the track, and also contributes to the NJ based weekly racing paper Area Auto Racing News. Over the years heÆs freelanced to many racing publications such as Trackside, Shorttrack and New England Speedway Scene.

I'm chassied with delight, goosebumps, and memories! Steve Kennedy brings back the raw, loud, grit-in-your-teeth days -- and the imaginative mechanics and drivers -- that would define the years to come. Before rules, regulations, and pop-out chassies caught on, they were modified racing's wonder years. --Richard Morey

Basically a photo album of the stars and cars that were active in modified racing in the northeast during this time period. No statistics or results, just pictures with a few lines about the driver of each race car. Most pictures are black and white, although there are some color shots. The photography is well done, and the pictures are clear. Most are posed shots, with a few action pictures. A nostalgia piece for anyone who remembers the glory days of the coupe bodied modified and the men who drove them. A few made their way to larger circuits (including NASCAR) but most restricted their racing to the tracks closer to their homes, and were not that well known outside of the northeast.

It is refreshing to know that someone has preserved the memories of these great old days of racing. They were called "modifieds", "cut-downs", and "open-wheelers", and thrilled us old-timers while rubbing tires and swapping paint on the local racetracks. This book covered many of the tracks, and represented both dirt and asphalt. I am thoroughly enjoying going back in time when racing wasn't so clinical and overly regimented. They raced for the sport and the glory of the moment, not for the big mega-buck payoffs and entrance fees, etc.. Guts, courage, and ingenuity triumphed over $$$!

The first and only book dedicated to 'Modified' racing cars that competed in the northeast (and southeast) back in the day. Author Steve Kennedy was on the scene as a track photographer for many years (still is) and he knew what he had there.
This book is a must for any racing fan who grew up in the northeast and attended short track racing there. Contains many rare photos. Highly recommended.

Having grown up in New England and being exposed to the stock car world, this has to be the greatest collection of photos and drivers stories that I have seen. The memories just flow from this publication. If it wasn't for these heros NASCAR would have been just a fleeting thought. This is a HISTORY book for any fan and what a source for trivia!

Loved this book, looked at it and shared it with others. i grew up in this era, was reading and hearing about these racers and saw some race, but it was great stuff, love the pictures. It was nice to dsee the progression through the years in the different level of fabbing and the "look" of each year.
