Rebuilding a Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 Transmission,
By Ronald R. Luman (Columbia, MD) - See all my reviews
This review is from: How to Work with and Modify the Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 Transmission (Motorbooks Workshop) (Paperback)
This book is marvelous. With absolutely no prior experience with automatic transmissions, I have successfully used this book and Mr. Sessions' previous book on the Turbo Hydra-Matic 350 to rebuild two transmissions. For the novice, all you need is a Master Rebuild Kit and about two weeks of patience, and you can save over $1000 by doing the rebuild yourself. The book has a good discussion on theory, but you can skip right to the "how-to" sections and follow the text/pictures to a successful end.

Finally, Transmission repair made easy,

I'm an accomplished mechanic and found the manual to be very comprehensive. I've not yet done the work, but have read the manual and appreciate the author having taken the mystery out of automatic transmissions. He's cost-conscious and he shows how to do the work with common shop tools rather than expensive OEM special tools. He also thoroughly explains the advantages and disadvantages of modification, be it high performance or performance enhancement. I'm anxious to begin!!

TH400 rebuild - 1979 Jeep CJ7,

Great reference for rebuilding any TH400 - contains complete information in a step by step format. This is the first reference I've seen that contains information about the TH400 used by AMC (Jeep) other than the actual service manuals.

Wonderful. I read this book cover to cover. I've never tackled a transmission, and the subject has always intimidated me. I knew the general theory, but after reading this book I feel confident to rebuild my own TH400. At least if I have trouble I'll know where to look and how to communicate the problems to someone else now!

This book was very thorough BUT is out of date. It needs to be updated by the author(s) and include the revisions that came about in later years.

The Turbo 400 Bible,
By Lugnut (Midwest, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: How to Work with and Modify the Turbo Hydra-Matic 400 Transmission (Motorbooks Workshop) (Paperback)
This is the book that launched me into rebuilding automatics. It is a definitive work on the Turbo 400 and is also quite helpful in demystifying automatic transmissions in general. If studied sufficiently, it'll help you understand HOW they work. It's much more than just a disassemble/reassemble guide.
I've had my copy for over a decade, and it's now battered, dog eared, greasy and peppered with margin notes. Read it cover to cover when first purchased, then I took my time and spent two weeks building my first one. That was 10 years ago and it's still motivating my dad's old Chevy pickup around. Since then I've rebuilt a couple of dozen 400s, quite a few 350s, a 700R4 or two, and lately a 4L80E. I have a whole shelf full of how-to books and can honestly say it is the most heavily used one of them all.

Great Manual. Lots of step by step instructions with photos and illustrations. This book is all you need to rebuild your TH400. I've never even opened an automatic transmission before, and this book walked me through a complete rebuild. I high reccommend it.
