Amadeo Modigliani(1884-1920) has remained one of the most popular artists of modern times; his reputation has never been eclipsed by the great revolutionary figures who were his contemporaries. His sensuous nudes, his innocent, trusting children, his portraits - which capture the individual personalities of his subjects despite his highly mannered style - all show the exquisite refinement of line and color that explain his enduring appeal. Although influenced by the avant-garde movements of his time, Modigliani's art also has the flavor of his heritage, the immortal fifteenth-century art of his native Italy.

In his life, Modigliani cut the figure of the quintessential bohemian artist. He was notorious for the excesses of his appetites, and they led to his untimely death at the age of thirty-six. His great love, Jeanne Hebuterne, committed suicide on the morning after his death. Yet the legend of his dissipation and irregular life may have been exaggerated, as the late Dr. Alfred Werner points out in this book, for the intense productivity of his pitifully short life bespeaks a man driven to work as much as to live.

To write this book, Dr. Werner, an authority on the School of Paris painters, consulted with family and friends of the artist and examined a great deal of documentary material, some of which is reproduced here. In addition to his paintings, Modigliani's drawings and his sculptures - which he himself valued above all else in his art - are included in this striking study of a brief but incandescent life.

Amadeo Modigliani abandoned his career as a sculptor for purely economic reasons, yet his experience with hammer and chisel enabled him to discover his true means of expression as a painter. The smoldering sensuality of his nudes, writes Roy, puts Modigliani in the direct lineage of Italian Renaissance masters. His portraits of women have wistful loneliness as their dominant note, yet he captures many moods and attitudes, from smug complacency to sheer joy in living, in his sitters. This gracefully written essay, originally published in 1958 and now beautifully decked out with 176 reproductions (93 in color), makes a companionable introduction to the life and work of the Paris-based Italian bohemian, who was considered a reactionary conservative in his own time. The illustrations are terrific, and Roy impartially plumbs the dark soul of the self-destructive artist who described himself in the verse: "He sheds the tears of those who have failed to reach the stars."

This book brings together 40 prints of the artist's paintings in beautiful colour, as well as a lengthy text which precedes them, with photographs of Modigliani, and examples of his sculptures and caryatids. Werner presents M as a tragic figure since his health was poor - he suffered from tuberculosis all his life, and he died relatively young at 35, without receiving any substantial recognition of his work. Much is made of his excessive social life in Paris, though M was Italian, where he is said to have indulged in alcohol and hashish. He focused on painting after he was unable to continue with sculpture because of his lack of money, the difficulty in obtaining materials, and the affect of the stone dust on his weak lungs. Werner also tells us that M suffered from a psychoneurosis, and calls him a "solipsist who produced exclusively self-portraits, symbolic representations of his own tortured soul". However these arguments do not appear to relate to the nature of his painting. His work is calm, not tortured, and the idea that his infamous style of Expressionist distortion is meant to reveal a "paranoiac autism" seems silly. The photos we see of M show that he does not resemble his skittle-shaped, swan-necked, almond-eyed portraits. Even the notion that some of the subjects having closed eyes meaning an inner directed concentration based on a fear of the world, does not appreciate the stylistic choice he made to express his form of conception upon reality. He had trained as a draftsman and considered his work "illuminations", accentuating attributes to the point of caricature. The faces of his sculptures bear the same kind of visage. His work is both striking in his use of colour, where he favoured strong lines and prefered primary blacks and reds; and tender in the delicate way he treats the subjects, whether they be Parisian socialities, other artists, his two mistresses - Beatrice Hastings and Jeanne Hebuterne, or working class models like maids and peasants. What ultimately makes the work of Modigliani great is how one can return to the prints again and again, to revel in their mannered elegance, their sadness and beauty, and his unique balance between naturalism and abstraction.
