5.0 out of 5 stars A great sonic ride! May 26, 2010
Format:MP3 Music
This is not your average Hip-Hop album. After multiple listens of both Midnight Green and Outtakes and C-Sides, one can come to the assumption that this Modill is all about soulful, meaningful, and well-thought-out art.
This third project is a great bar to measure against most other independent, underground Hip-Hop. K-Kruz (oftentimes compared to Prefuse 73) brings heavy vibes and nice percussion to the table, while RacecaR (compared to M.F.Doom, deservedly so in the lyrics area) seems to "move" effortlessly through each sonic backdrop as if it were a three-dimensional mosaic. Where the previous projects seem to touch on standard fare(though very nicely executed), this self-titled project very much hits one dead center in her/his soul. The tone throughout is much more down-to-earth and based on the everyday struggles of living in modern day, as opposed to standard subject matter found on most independent releases (i.e. rocking the mic, making the party hype, comparing skills or hacking at wack mc's).
A rare find, it is almost reminiscent of a Hip-Hop version of say, a Curtis Mayfield soundtrack (coincidentally also from Chicago). No chest pounding necessary as the skill to bring the varied thematic of life's challenges (dealing with stress relief, family puzzles and the state of "Hip-Hop") are obvious in the choice of metaphors and general thoughtfulness in both the vocals and the production.
Challenge yourself to sit thru this gem in an entire listen, and you may find yourself not only hooked, but enlightened to the wonder that is Modill.
