3.0 out of 5 stars Module Magic
I was hoping to build a sweater with blocks knitted from left over yarn but the styles in this book were not suitable for me--a 60+ knitter.

It is indeed magic and a delightful innovation to tempt long-time knitters. These authors have brought this technique alive within the knitting community and this beautiful book is as a good a place to start as any. A few things you need to know - (the K.I.S.S. rule of Keep it simple) modules are easy and fun to make but they extend the time a project takes - maybe even by double. Also, this book presents too many riches for the beginning knitter, who can come away believing this is too complex to master. As with any new technique, everyone can learn this technique and most will love it, providing you pick one of their easier projects and keep it simple until you learn the properties of the modules: e.g. they don't all end up exactly the same size even if you are careful to check gauge, properties of different yarns will change not only the size but the 'squareness' of modules, you can't substitute yarns and stitches unless you do swatches. To their credit, the authors of course advise you to check gauge, do swatches, etc. but they don't give one piece of advice needed to prevent heartache: do a simple project or two before attempting the mouthwatering, expensive, and complex beauties in the book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Helpful hints for designing your own, June 25, 2006
By
Becky Z. "In XS" (Arlington, WA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Module Magic: Creative Projects to Knit One Block at a Time (Paperback)
It's full of interesting and beautiful sweaters and even socks. The modules can be put together in many creative ways for unusual color effects. But I bought it because the design tips in "Domino Knitting" by V. Hoxbro are too vague. Ginger Luters is a bit vague too, but she does have graph paper. The only way to design is make a swatch, measure it, make drawings and calculations, and dive in. The sweater is still in progress but is coming along just fine. I'm in my 50's and wouldn't mind wearing any of the women's sweaters in Luters' book, especially "De Colores". Brilliant and vibrant yet tasteful.

4.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring, July 15, 2008
This review is from: Module Magic: Creative Projects to Knit One Block at a Time (Paperback)
Not exactly magic, but this book is a great tutorial for learning the technique of modular knitting. It breaks down the process by shape, with instructions for making and combining squares, strips, triangles, miters, etc., into beautiful, colorful fabrics and garments. The patterns are varied, and each type of module is illustrated in more than one possible combination. If this book doesn't stimulate knitting creativity, I don't know what will! A great addition to the serious knitter's library, for inspiration, instruction, patterns, and more.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent project guide, February 2, 2007
This review is from: Module Magic: Creative Projects to Knit One Block at a Time (Paperback)
MODULE MAGIC: CREATIVE PROJECTS TO KNIT ONE BLOCK AT A TIME simplifies and explains the entire process of block knitting, which uses squares, triangles and strips to piece together projects. Knitters will want some basic background in reading instructions' abbreviations, but will appreciate the blend of small color photos, diagrams for piecing, and step-by-step pattern directions. An excellent project guide knitting libraries will find attractive for lending and display.

5.0 out of 5 stars inspired, May 21, 2008
This review is from: Module Magic: Creative Projects to Knit One Block at a Time (Paperback)
this book definitely inspired me. just purchased yarn -online- of course, to make a sweater from the book. beautiful images of garments. suggest rather advanced pattern reading skills to tackle majority of projects. each square is easy to create but directions are complex sounding. will be creating my second block design garment. i may post as grandma but i appreciate contemporary knitting yarns and tools.

This book is an excellent companion to the class I took at Stitches West 2008. Clear and concise, it is illustrated with sketches and describe the pattern perfectly. Even is you have not taken such a class, it will suit perfectly in training you for your modular knitting.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best book on modular knitting!, April 17, 2011

I absolutely love this book! I've bought several knitting books on modular knitting. And out of all of those books, none of them are as thorough in covering all shapes. The other books I own mainly cover squares and triangles. This book has patchwork, strips, hexagons, letter shapes, and shapes knitted at different angles and in different size combinations. The book is so colorful and inspirational with all of the instructional pictures. I love the design of the book! Definetely knitters, buy this book. You won't regret it!
