This Moen knob handle breaks quite frequently, because it's a plastic handle that turns a metal stem for your shower. Eventually the plastic stem snaps and the entire knob becomes useless. Pretty poor design from an engineering perspective, but great for making customers repeatedly buy a piece of plastic. Looking at the inside of the handle, the word "Moen" and the number "96997" is engraved, despite the part number on the packaging listing 100710. I plan on eventually replacing the entire metal stem, but in the meantime, one replacement knob every few years is easier.

As many others here have noted, these plastic handles do not last. The Moen part 100710 (stamped 96997 on the handle) break fairly easily. After replacing several, I switched to a different handle. There are many Moen Posi-Temp handles that can be used in place of the 100710. Moen's web site has exploded parts views for many different models of Posi-Temp tub and shower faucets. I chose the Chateau chrome handle (part # 100657). Very simple and comes with the adapter and screws needed to install on the existing faucet. Found an online dealer that with shipping, is only a few dollars more than the 100710 price. Available here at Amazon ([...]). Save yourself some headaches and switch to something better.

For the life of me I cannot understand why a part under as much stress as this one is made to be cheap plastic. I guess it's some kind of planned obsolescence where they get to make a steady stream of income on people coming back for more of the same. It reminds me of the old 70's domestic cars where if it wasn't the door handle breaking, then it was the window handle... you get the idea.

After going through two of these plastic not-so-fantastics in less than 6 months (the original and it's replacement), I decided to not be fooled again on replacement number 3 and searched for a better way. I found it; no modifications, no extra hardware or adapters needed. Just a solid, robust, not-plastic solution.

I strongly recommend instead you try this metal handle, the Danco 80004. It is specifically designed for the Moen single handle tubs and showers (without the push button diverter, although I think they have a separate solution for that too). It contains all the adapters you need so you don't need to buy anything else. There is no plastic anything in this Danco kit, from the handles to adapters. It's a few extra steps to install which will take you a couple more minutes but believe me, it's worth it. I found mine at that big national orange hardware "depot" but it's also available here at Amazon.

Unlike most other reviewers, I've had this knob on 2 showers for 11 years before they broke. Coincidently, both broke on the same day. This after one shower being used daily for 2 people and the other having been used only a handful of times. The less used one broke after taking it off to eyeball what a not-broke one looked like. It broke putting it back on. Same plastic piece broke on both most reviewers mentioned. Have the same type knob on 3 bathroom sink faucets, only a smaller size. None of them have broke yet. Not sure if Moen made this a little different on the older ones to have them hold up longer, or the fact that there's only 2 adults using them.

Ordered these as a replacement and they fit perfectly. Used expedited shipping as I was reduced to using a pliers to manually turn on/off the water in the shower. Arrived in 4 days. Took less than 5 minutes to replace. Keeping my fingers crossed they hold up as long as the originals, but ordered 4 extra knobs just in case. The price was certainly reasonable enough to order extras.

***Update on 11/6/2013***

Still using this replacement water knob for the shower that I bought 2 years ago with no problems. One in a shower being used at least twice daily and one on a seldom used shower.

A plumber installed a Moen Posi-Temp faucet in my bathroom. Seems to work just fine, but for some reason, the handle breaks every 6-8 months (the inner plastic ring cracks and it can no longer grip the metal stem). The Posi-Temp handle does not seem to work with generic tub faucet knobs, and I cannot always find this in stores. So I now keep a spare in my house at all times. I guess I should just replace the faucet, but a new knob every 8 months is less than a plumber will charger to put in a new one, so I'm relatively happy.

These break after every couple of months if you are lucky. Just spend a little bit more and buy a sturdier handle. Especially if you live in an area that has really hard water (I have soft water installed in my home), it really just corrodes the plastic and you end up with another broken handle. Do not buy!

I have two tub/showers with this fixture. I probably replace this knob at least once or twice a year. The inside plastic ring breaks easily. Once broken you can not fully shut off the water flow without removing the knob and turning the brass water flow valve with a pair of pliers.

Good thing they are easy to replace.

But buy several to have on hand. I have 5 extras right now. Giving a low rating because of quality of knob
