It's been two days and I've almost got the mixer cartridge out to where I can install the replacement. Two days of hell.

If you go look at the pullers (search for Moen 1222 cartridge puller) you will see where some people have good luck and some people don't and have to turn it over to a plumber to fix.

What happens is there are two rubberish gaskets that seal against the housing and a funky valve on the inside of the cartridge that mixes the water. In low use situations, it freezes up and you lose hot water. Then when you try to replace the cartridge, it may or may not be frozen in the barrel. I got the Danco puller which as far as I can tell from the picture of the Moen tool is identical. It mostly broke it free but the gaskets are stuck and holding the barrel captive. It's been a little by little ordeal to get the damn cartridge out.

The rub is in low use areas. If these don't get regularly exercised, they freeze and die. I would run my shower monthly to make sure I had water in the trap. Not enough. If you have a bathroom with a shower and tub and only use the tub, do yourself a favor and consider replacing the cartridge before it freezes. Seriously. Consider replacing the cartridges every other year if it's in a low use situation.

Moen made some very bad materials choices to use stuff that grows together or is so subject to water deposits it freezes - and you get to suffer for it. Bet they saved a few cents.

Never again for me. I will never have a single mixing valve for anything in a wall. These things suck. Sink faucets can easily be replaced when they freeze up, but something in wall is a major renovation if you can't get the cartridge out. Remember - one tool slip and you can damage the barrel and then it will leak.

Saved 50% from what my local plumbing shop was going to charge. Also - go on the MOne website first to make sure you are ordering the exact model number - as they come in CC (copper to copper connection) and another version that screw in versus sodering. Your plumber can tell you which oone to buy. The Moen 800 customer service number will also answer your questions. Love my new shower! I love Moen products.

Moen makes an excellent quality product and this valve is no exception. Built-in stops allow you to turn off the water at the valve in the event you ever need to replace your cartridge. Posi-Temp causes the water to turn on instantly and cycles from cold to hot. This same valve is used for shower and tub/shower applications. Used in conjunction with the Brantford Trim Kits.

This valve controls the flow of water so that when the pressure changes (like when a toilet gets flushed) the temp doesn't change. Two drawbacks are that I find it takes a little bit of time to adjust to temp changes when increasing or decreasing the temp of the water. Also, it doesn't seem to actually keep the temp of the water constant, but rather the flow rates of each of the hot and cold feeds once it's gotten to a set point. This means that it won't continually increase the hot water feed as the hot water in your hot water heater gets expended. You'll still need to add more and more hot water as you deplete the water heater. Neither is a big deal...I'd buy it again, but an even more advanced valve that could deal with these two issues would be great.

We installed this last week, and it has not stopped leaking since. Do I need to reach out to Moen for a rebuilding kit?

Don't buy Moen. Horrible instructions. Parts don't fit. Needed to call and get replacement parts for new trim and valve.

If you are looking at shower sets, this is the control valve that goes behind the wall; it is essential for a complete installation. It does a good job of balancing hot and cold and protecting against scalds.

This is a good blend of price and performance. I wish they were using the non-staining nano-technology coating on this oil-rubbed bronze finish, as they do with the brushed nickel finish.
