The tension shower rods that I've used in the past have all worked by the same mechanism. Those rods consisted of two hollow cylinders, one of which screwed into the other; by screwing or unscrewing the cylinders, I could vary the length of the rod. This design is functional, but it has two downsides. First, it can take a *long* time to expand or contract a shower rod, since you might have to rotate the bar a hundred times or more. Second, the shower rod can tend to slowly lose tension and unscrew itself over time, causing it to "walk" down your wall or fall down completely.
Moen attempts to work around these problems with a technology that they call "FastLock." The idea is that you can simply pull the shower rod out to the desired length, twist it a few times, and voila -- it locks into place.
That's the theory, anyway. In practice, no matter how much I tried, I could not make the first shower rod that Amazon delivered to me lock into place.
The good news is that Amazon's customer service was, as always, excellent. They arranged for UPS to pick up the defective shower rod, and they shipped a new one via overnight mail.
But the second rod didn't work as intended, either. I extended it to the desired length, twisted, and... nothing happened.
After lots of fiddling, I eventually managed to make the second rod work. Here's how: I disassembled the rod by fully removing the narrower cylinder from the wider one. This revealed the FastLock mechanism: essentially, a rubberized, rotating device at the tip of the narrower cylinder that expands as you twist it.Read more ›
Glazed tile is way too smooth for this product. I can't imagine any vertical tile where I would trust this rod to actually hold up. I bought this to avoid permanent holes, or possible cracking, on my new tile from a permanent bracket. We decided to try another type of tension rod (before going the route of a permanent fixed mount), and the new spring loaded rod is much better. The Moen tension rod is garbage for use on a vertical wall in my opinion. Do yourself a favor and avoid frustration and costly damage by steering clear of this product.
I've spent over 30 minutes trying to get this thing to stay on the wall. It won't. I will mention here that I'm a carpenter, a specialized carpenter and not a house carpenter, but nonetheless this sort of project is not exactly over my head. I thought there must be something I was missing, something I was doing wrong, though I've installed lots of tension rods in my day. Then I thought maybe I had somehow gotten a broken one. No. It's not broken, and I'm not doing anything wrong. It's just a total piece of crap.
Unfortunately this was a project I was going to tackle during the winter storm we've got blowing in, so now my choices are: head back out to exchange this piece of garbage in a storm, or have no shower curtain for a couple days. Awesome experience all around, basically. I'd never heard of this brand before but I can say with confidence that I will never buy anything by them in the future, at least not without serious research and questioning.
I should have read the reviews before I purchased it. It worked for a few months and then the lock that is supposed to keep it at the length you need fizzled out. It just falls off the wall unless it is sitting on the tile and the shower curtain drags on the floor. It looked really nice and I thought Moen was a reputable company. I plan to contact the company but meanwhile, don't waste your money. It may look nice, but it doesn't function. It's too late to return, so I'm stuck. But, maybe my review will help someone else to avoid spending time and money on something that will just go into the trash bin within a couple of months.

Horrible! Doesn't stay up, the so called locking system is a huge fail. Fresh out of the box and the little plastic ring that is supposed to bridge the gap between the two... Read morePublished 3 days ago by Electric Mom
