5.0 out of 5 stars Forget lyrics.
The fact that Mogwai will continue to go largely unappreciated throughout their music carrer is a great shame. When I've showed this CD to various people they have instantly brushed it off because of the lack of lyrics. All I can say to this type of person is that you must try to look beyond the superficiality of words over songs and listen to the profound greatness...

3.0 out of 5 stars there may be better places to look than mogwai
although this is an interesting ep with some beautifully put together moments, on the whole, i think there are much better cds for everything that they do. tortoise seems to create a better sound on the whole than does mogwai and arab strap is better than mogwai at allowing you to live in misery for a bit. neither of these bands do incredibly similar things to...

The fact that Mogwai will continue to go largely unappreciated throughout their music carrer is a great shame. When I've showed this CD to various people they have instantly brushed it off because of the lack of lyrics. All I can say to this type of person is that you must try to look beyond the superficiality of words over songs and listen to the profound greatness beneath which is Mogwai. Lyrics do not make a great song, feeling and emotion makes a great song and Mogwai oozes with these qualities.

5.0 out of 5 stars A brilliant EP, the best instrumental rock has to offer., November 1, 2004
This review is from: Mogwai (Audio CD)
This EP really is near a masterpiece. Rollerball is a slow, ambient piece that doesn't seem to do much, but the rest of the songs here are really gorgeous. Stanley Kubrick, the records finest moment, slithers through your speakers with its blissful melancholy. Small Children in the Background is a track brilliantly done as well -- a painful rage and longing that lurks underneath the surface until it finally reaches its boiling point. There is a hint of optimism in Christmas Song, a charming little piece that shimmers and chimes. These songs conjure up so many memories of life, its desires, its sadness most of all. I had the pleasure of seeing Mogwai recently, not hearing much of their music beforehand, and they promptly blew me away. These guys are truly gifted musicians, and the praise they get couldn't be enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awh, Music to Look out of Windows, February 21, 2000
This review is from: Mogwai (Audio CD)
The Mogwai EP is really different from Young Team, and Ten Rapid, but as mighty good. This time around, as oppose to catchy melodies, and smooth basslines, it's just noise that creeps up on you. Noise that you didn't notice, was always playing in the background of your life. (how come Mogwai always seems to know what music played when you were doing blah-blah, so many years ago?) it's haunting. Especially Small Children in the Background. I listened to it while reading Angela's Ashes, and it invoked this spooky sense of my childhood in a Brooklyn brownstones. The large windows frosted over with steam frothing from the hissing radiator (which I'm sure is what's playing in the background of the track exactly). It just envokes this small wonderment of being a child again, so small and insignificant to the world unknown, so happy, so sad. Ahhh lovely. Get everything by this band, they are GREAT!

5.0 out of 5 stars pure essence of music, December 6, 1999
This review is from: Mogwai (Audio CD)
A longtime Mogwai fan, I can offer this modicum to newcomers to their music. A friend of mine criticized this band as "average talented musicians who play instruments and that's all." On the contrary, what you will find is that although Mogwai lacks the guitar and drum pyrotechnics of what is considered "rock" music, they are in fact great composers of sound, shaping and creating aural worlds with simple, heartfelt sounds. Where traditional "fuzz rock" bands intended to melt our brains with layers of guitar sludge, Mogwai introduces tight and emotional structure, and create music that is arresting, profound, and moving beyond words. This EP is an excellent showcase of their craft, and an excellent starter for those interested in their sound and also the music emerging out of Glasgow, with bands such as Arab Strap and Belle and Sebastian. Highly recommended!

4.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding EP, March 14, 2006
This review is from: Mogwai (Audio CD)
Everything recorded around this Come on die young period is stellar..In many ways i wish the band never outgrew the stark formats that in my opinion pushed them farther as musicians then anything has since..Some truly beautiful gems here, almost too good to believe they just didn't put it on CODY and make it the ultimate album of that year..The material is a little more cheery (cheery-ha!), then that of CODY but would have worked well in contrast to so many of that album's empty feelings..

5.0 out of 5 stars mmm hot stuff, November 20, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Mogwai (Audio CD)
when i saw mogwai last month, two nights in a row, i spent the entire time thinking of ways i could dedicate my entire exsistance to noise like this - to perfect noise. mogwai make the butterflies in my stomach go estatic. they are the hardcore band i searched for in my youth, while also being the slowcore band of my twentysomething dreams. they are perfect - i have a new respect for boys with comb-overs. i-heart-mogwai

5.0 out of 5 stars Probably the intro to Mogwai, March 8, 2000
By
This review is from: Mogwai (Audio CD)
I am completely new to Mogwai. I have never heard anything like this album before, and I consider myself to be fairly knowledgeable about different genres of music. It's rock without the burden of poppy, quirky, poetic lyrics that digress like a novel (building to a climax as in Rage:Man) to the closing of the last two songs (which to my understanding were recorded in '98 not at the same time as the other four songs.) Remarkable... "Christmas Song" is spiritually moving, as is "Burn Girl Prom Queen" and "Rage:Man"- you can feel the rush that builds in the latter song, before it bursts into distortion/angry guitar. Beautifully emotional CD and I will be listening to they're older material. Buy this CD whether you're a fan or not, you will not be disappointed if you call yourself open-minded about music (this is probably the best introduction to Mogwai).

Members of Mogwai, I tip my pint to you...

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome., May 24, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Mogwai (Audio CD)
A nice blend of the dynamic, fuzzed-out noise of"Young Team" with the gentler, soothing melodies of "Come On Die Young." A very good introduction to the band, and probably the one Mogwai album that I end up listening to most. Not nearly as exhausting as their LPs, but just as intense and pretty.

i am a new fan to MOgwai's sounds ( only got to them through C.O.D.Y)...all i can say is that...this EP is utterly beautiful..."stanley kubrick" is a perfect tribute to the late great filmmaker ( if it ever was meant to be one!)...and whats nice is that the US version has 2 extra tracks taken from their old ep's. Mogwai IS the Post Rock for the year 2000. Go get it!
