Shot during a memorable concert in April 2006 at the Banlieues Blues Festival in Paris, this film is a tribute to great Ethiopian singer Mohammed Jimmy Mohammed, who passed away in December of the same year. In addition to the concert featuring his trio and mythical free-jazz drummer Han Bennink, this DVD presents, among other bonuses, an interview with Mohammed in which he discusses his blindness, his faith, and his art.
"A compelling meeting of two worlds--one that features the blind singer from Addis Ababa, Jimmy Mohammed, working with avant drummer Han Bennink! Given that Jimmy's core trio is on board for support, the music is definitely more in the vein of other titles in the Ethiopiques series--and inflected strongly with Mohammed's wonderfully bluesy vocal tones! Yet Bennink's percussion work is still a strong force too--and really underscores the tunes with a surprisingly powerful feel at times." -- Dusty Groove
