Book Description

June 12, 2007
With this, his fourth waterfall guidebook, Albany writer Russell Dunn has now written more books about waterfalls than any other author in the world. Mohawk Region Waterfall Guide treats the reader to 79 cool cascades, from the Helderbergs escarpment on the outskirts of Albany and magnificent Cohoes Falls near the confluence of the Mohawk and Hudson rivers, through the storied Mohawk Valley out to Utica, past the farmlands and historic villages of Schoharie Valley ( the breadbasket of the American Revolution ), out to Cooperstown and the legendary Leatherstocking Region, and along scenic Route 20 all the way to Syracuse. Dunn s thorough research provides a wealth of historical and anecdotal material, and his detailed directions and maps make locating the falls easy. Illustrated with 70 antique postcards and 20 maps.

Editorial Reviews

Review

The book is a multi-facetted resource. It describes the regional geologic setting for the waterfalls how they came into being many thousands of years ago, and how they are still changing. It provides information about the history and local lore surrounding many of the waterfalls. When appropriate, the book also describes other nearby features of interest to make your trip even more interesting. The directions to the waterfalls, at least for the ones I have visited, are all very clear. As editor of the Helderberg Escarpment Planning Guide, I consider myself somewhat of an expert on natural resources in the Helderbergs. So I am embarrassed to say that Mr. Dunn s book even provides directions to a waterfall by Long Road, only a few miles from my home, that I had never visited. Finally, the book includes extensive endnotes and a large bibliography. The endnotes should not be ignored; in addition to listing sources, many of them provide more in-depth information about topics. Mohawk Region Waterfall Guide is a book that will help to make the region a better and healthier place to live and to work. --Dan Driscoll, board member, past president, and chair of Land Preservation & Stewardship for the Mohawk-Hudson Land Conservancy.
