Product Description

The Mohu Jolt makes picture quality clear and vivid, and can even pull in channels outside your antenna's range. Colors pop and dance. Images are fluid and crisp. Flipping between channels happens in the blink of an eye. The Jolt improves your antenna's performance, so you can get back to more important things, like watching your favorite shows. And with USB power connection, the Jolt only uses power when your TV is turned on. Exactly how an amplifier should work.

We live outside Denver's "official" broadcast area. When we decided to ditch satellite and go with broadcast TV, we had a hard time getting good reception on most of the channels (and couldn't get some of them at all). When we got a Mohu antenna, it was a total game changer (we later tried a Winegard antenna, which is also quite good). But we still have a couple of major channels that pixelate under some circumstances, so I was eager to try this Mohu amplifier.

So that we could judge if the amplifier helped or not, we did a channel scan without it and got 27 channels. We also took note that a couple of those pixelated very badly (low-powered stations; the major stations that sometimes pixelate were coming in okay today). Then we installed the Mohu Jolt and ran the channel scan again. This time we got 33 channels. This is clearly an improvement. And the channels that were pixelating now came in clear. Based on just these two points, I can say quite definitively that the Mohu Jolt works.

The Mohu antenna works so extremely well by itself, I don't think there was much room for improvement. So, for us, the Jolt wasn't terribly helpful (the extra stations it pulled in are stations we don't want, anyway). But someone who doesn't have a leaf antenna would probably see a much greater improvement.

I notice that Mohu now also sells a leaf antenna with a built-in amplifier. Since that doesn't cost much more than just this amplifier, if you don't already have a Mohu antenna, that would probably be the way to go.

I have been a fan of Mohu for almost two years now as I have not had cable in my apartment and was just streaming until I got a Leaf. I am not home much and most of what is on cable I can get with my Smart TV apps. I now have two Leaf antennas in my apartment, one in the living room and one in my bedroom. I live in Manhattan and get 78 channels on one and 71 on the other. I probably would get more with this amp but I don't really need anything more than I already receive. However, I did get two Leafs for my parents in Garden City so they could return two of their cable boxes in the basement and the guest bedroom. Garden City is about 20 miles outside of the city and they get about 25 channels with their two antennas. However, according to my mom, if it snows or is super windy the signals pixelate and even cut out for a second or two. I was going to get them two Ultimate but then saw this thing. So, the point of the review is that I got them two Jolts, shipped from J&R and got to their house in two days. I set them up last weekend and they are now getting 45 channels on each of the two televisions. Pretty sweet. The Jolt's actually look like the images and have some sort of soft touch finish on them. They look expensive and it a shame they sit behind a television. I am not sure if the "Cleanpeak" filtering is applicable because they are not too close to any towers (if anyone is, I am on 63rd Street) but the 15dB of gain has given them more channels. I have to wait and see if the reception is going to be more consistent but I imagine it will be. Definitely recommend this product if you need to amplify your leaf or any other antenna you have although from Mohu's web site this is not meant for a Leaf Plus as its already amped. Five stars as they now have two tv's powered with 45 channels for about 200 bucks. Next stop is my grandma's Christmas gift. Mohu seem to have their act together.

This interested me because I have an original Mohu Leaf antenna and a Mohu Leaf Plus (not the newer Leaf Ultimate) powered antenna. I've had better luck with the original but thought it would be interesting to see if the Jolt helped or hindered either one. How well the Jolt works with non-Mohu antennas is something I'll never know - there are a zillion of them out there and a zillion other variables that could determine how well or poorly an antenna will work in your situation. (Zillion is a technical term somewhere south of Kazillion.)

I compared the Leaf and Leaf Plus with and without the Jolt. I used the same television for all the tests, placed the antennas in exactly the same position with the same orientation, used the same connector cable(s) and adapter(s) as much as possible, and did all the tests one after another in about a 45 minute period on a clear, sunny afternoon.

* Original Leaf: 10 clear, solid channels, 6 flakes (pixelated or fading in and out, not really watchable)

* Original Leaf + Jolt: 18 clear, no flakes but 1 channel the Original alone got (very poorly) went away completely

* Leaf Plus with integrated amp off: 3 clear, 0 flakes

* Leaf Plus with integrated amp off + Jolt: 0 clear, 7 flakes

* Leaf Plus with integrated amp on, 15 clear, 3 flakes

* Leaf Plus with integrated amp on + Jolt: 15 clear, 3 flakes

You'll never duplicate my results because of all the variables (house orientation, house elevation, distance to broadcast towers, number of broadcasters in area, weather, antenna height and orientation). But this confirms my recollection that I get better results from the original Leaf than from the Leaf Plus. Remember: that's just me!
