5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best blues albums to be released in recent years, with stunning acoustic slide guitar to boot..., November 15, 2006
A few years back, my purchases of new blues albums (ie. not reeditions of old stuff) dwindled down to a trickle. There's so much copycat playing and "writing" that it all sounds like the same half-hearted cloning to these ears. When I purchased Kevin Brown's Mojave Dust, it was mostly because I'd seen him live in 1995 and had fond memories of the gig.

I wasn't dissapointed. This is one of the best blues records released thes e last ten years, with Kevin Brown being that rare gem that combines stunning musicianship, a great voice and original songwriting, all the while remaining within the boundaries of his genre of choice, namely blues.

The first thing that strikes you when you hear this record is the ethereal, cristalline guitar sound. I don't think I've ever heard a slide guitar player sound quite like that. There's probably some Ry Cooder in there, but there's so much that's just Kevin Brown that there's little point in digging for influences.

The record is, on the whole, rather melancholy, as showcased by the opening title track Mojave Dust. The haunting slide sound and the delicate singing evokes a desert landscape of regrets. That doesn't mean Mojave Dust doesn't have those foot tapping songs, like the amazing No One but myself to Blame, which has a very driven beat. It's just that the overall mood, the lyrics, and more generally the esthetics of the music puts one in mind a certain sadness. Quite touching at times, gives me the kind of thrills I expect from blues that comes from the heart and guts rather than the ears and the fingers if you see what I mean.

Anyway, I most decidedly recommend this record to lovers of acoustic blues or folk as well as slide guitar fanatics. If you like Ry Cooder, David Lindley, Derek Trucks, Bob Brozman and all these cats, this guy needs to be added to your record collection.
